What's Inside?
- Mam Smith said 'Euphoria' actors were “pushed” during emotionally vulnerable season three scenes.
- Sydney Sweeney’s controversial Cassie storyline sparked criticism over explicit and degrading content.
- Sam Levinson praised Sydney Sweeney’s performance amid mounting backlash against the HBO drama.
The conversation around Euphoria season three has shifted far beyond plot twists and character arcs. Much of the attention surrounding the latest episodes has focused on the show’s increasingly graphic material, especially scenes involving Sydney Sweeney and her character Cassie. While viewers continue debating whether the series has crossed a line, one of the show’s intimacy coordinators has now opened up about what happened behind the scenes during filming.
Mam Smith, who worked on multiple seasons of the HBO drama, recently discussed the emotional demands placed on the cast. Her comments arrive at a time when social media remains flooded with criticism over several controversial scenes involving Cassie, Rue and Jules. Smith’s remarks also shine a light on how productions attempt to balance artistic freedom with actor protection during vulnerable moments on set.
‘Euphoria’ Intimacy Coordinator On Season 3 Nude Scenes

Mam Smith explained that intimacy coordination was still unfamiliar to many productions when she first entered the field during work on Westworld in 2019. According to Smith, actors initially misunderstood the purpose of the role.
“They thought I was like HR and they were all in trouble. You know, the word police, the thought police, the action police. I was like, no, I’m here to facilitate. I’m here to help. I’m here to create communication.
Her approach to Euphoria relied heavily on trust, preparation and clear boundaries. Smith detailed the process of “body mapping”, where actors openly discuss what physical contact feels safe during intimate scenes.
“We do what we call body mapping. You talk to an actress or an actor [and ask], ‘Where is safe to touch and where isn’t?’ You go through it. ‘OK, not my bum. I don’t want you to touch my side fat. This will pull me out of the scene. This is good. My ears are sensitive.’”
She continued: “You set those parameters, then all the rest is fair game. So now you can be free, and you’re not worried, Oh, did I just cross a line? We actually are so clear on what our container is so you can be free within that.”
Smith admitted that season three presented constant challenges because of the emotional exposure demanded from the actors. “These actors were pushed – they were asked – to be so vulnerable, that creating a safe container was so important.”
Despite defending the production’s safety measures, Smith also questioned the growing trend of graphic television scenes. “I don’t know that things need to be sexually explicit. Lots of times, letting them fill in the gaps will keep people engaged rather than withdraw… I’m probably talking myself out of work.”
Sydney Sweeney Went Viral For Her Explicit Scenes In ‘Euphoria’ Season 3

Much of the backlash surrounding season three has centred on Sydney Sweeney. Cassie’s storyline pushed the character into darker and more provocative territory, with scenes designed to shock audiences almost immediately after the show’s return.
One episode featured Cassie posing for explicit online content while wearing a collar and leash. Another scene showed her styled as a sexualised baby while covered in food. The imagery quickly spread online, sparking fierce reactions from viewers who accused the series of leaning too heavily into humiliation and fetish material.
Critics also pointed to scenes involving Zendaya’s Rue and Hunter Schafer’s Jules, arguing that the latest season amplified explicit content far more aggressively than earlier instalments.
‘Euphoria’ Creator Sam Levinson Showers Praise On Sydney Sweeney Amid Season 3 Backlash

While criticism continues online, Sam Levinson has strongly defended Sydney Sweeney’s performance throughout the season. Speaking during The Hollywood Reporter’s Directors In Focus event, the creator praised her willingness to push emotional boundaries on screen.
Sam Levinson has high praise for Sydney Sweeney (calling her “brilliant”) as he details how he shot the brutal Cassie and Nate wedding night fight scene for Euphoria’s episode 3. “Sydney is just such a wonderful collaborator, I really cherish our relationship because…Sydney… pic.twitter.com/kV2tEXs5ie

“What’s interesting is if you push it a little bit, she becomes brilliant,” Levinson said.
“You just do a few more takes, and she can reach these levels that are very honest emotionally, but also deeply funny. She’s able to anchor the scene with this kind of madness and chaos going on around her.”
Smith also praised her ongoing collaboration with Zendaya, revealing how trust developed across multiple projects, including Challengers and The Drama.
“She’ll see me and know, ‘OK, Mam’s got this.’ She knows what I’m capable of. She knows I have her back. She knows I’m going to protect her.”
Euphoria season 3 is now streaming on HBO Max.
