What's Inside?
- Javier Bardem plays a haunting new version of infamous killer Max Cady.
- Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson star as attorneys targeted after Cady’s prison release.
- Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg executive produce the Apple TV+ thriller series.
Apple TV+ is bringing Cape Fear back with a modern television adaptation led by Javier Bardem and Amy Adams. The upcoming 10-episode psychological thriller revisits one of cinema’s most unsettling revenge stories, though this version expands the material into a deeper study of fear, paranoia, and America’s fascination with true crime. With Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg attached as executive producers, expectations surrounding the series are already high.
Set against a humid Southern backdrop, the show follows a married couple whose lives spiral after a dangerous man from their past returns seeking revenge. Early footage has already hinted at a tense atmosphere filled with dread, emotional breakdowns, and psychological warfare. Bardem’s chilling version of Max Cady appears to stand apart from earlier portrayals while still honouring the story’s disturbing legacy.
‘Cape Fear’ Plot & Synopsis

The new Cape Fear centres on attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Adams and Patrick Wilson. Their seemingly stable family life collapses when convicted killer Max Cady walks free from prison. Cady believes the couple destroyed his life after helping put him behind bars, and he returns determined to make them suffer.
Unlike a conventional crime thriller, the series leans heavily into psychological horror. Creator Nick Antosca described the project as “a tense, Hitchcockian psychological thriller” that also examines “America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century” (via Deadline). The story explores how fear spreads inside a household long before violence arrives at the front door.
Antosca also explained the tone that shaped the series, saying, “The first moment the show, to me, is about ambient dread. And it reflects the atmosphere of being alive in 2026, with its uncertainties and ambiguities and paranoia.” That emotional tension appears central to the adaptation, particularly as the Bowdens struggle to protect their children while Cady slowly inserts himself back into their world.
Adams revealed that Bardem’s portrayal brings more than menace. “He also brings a lot of vulnerability, and there’s so much devastation in this betrayal. I look forward to you guys getting to see it.” That emotional complexity may give the series a different identity from earlier film versions.
‘Cape Fear’ Cast And Crew

Bardem leads the cast as Max Cady, stepping into a role previously played by Robert Mitchum and Robert De Niro. Adams stars as Anna Bowden, while Wilson plays her husband Tom. The supporting cast includes CCH Pounder, Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Jamie Hector, Malia Pyles, Anna Baryshnikov, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Margarita Levieva.
The series was created and showrun by Nick Antosca, known for dark character-driven projects including The Act and A Friend of the Family. The pilot episode is directed by Morten Tyldum, who also serves as executive producer.
Behind the camera, the production carries a serious Hollywood pedigree. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg both return to the franchise as executive producers, linking the show directly to the acclaimed 1991 film adaptation. Bardem and Adams also hold executive producer credits, giving the lead stars creative involvement beyond their performances.
Is ‘Cape Fear’ Related To Martin Scorsese’s Iconic 1991 Thriller?

Yes, though the new series is not a direct remake of the 1991 film of the same name. The Apple TV+ adaptation draws inspiration from multiple versions of the story, beginning with John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. That novel first inspired the 1962 film directed by J. Lee Thompson before Scorsese reinvented it in 1991.
Antosca admitted that Scorsese’s film deeply affected him, calling it frightening because “there’s a kind of feverish energy to it,” adding that “it’s Southern, it’s swampy — it looks like a nightmare.” While the core revenge premise remains intact, he confirmed the story has been “reimagined” for modern audiences.
The series also appears more focused on long-form psychological tension than sudden shocks. Expanding the story across 10 episodes gives the writers room to explore trauma, obsession, and family breakdown in greater detail than the films could.
When Is ‘Cape Fear’ Releasing?

Cape Fear premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 5, with the first two episodes releasing together. New episodes will then arrive weekly every Friday through July 31.
The series has already generated attention after Apple unveiled its first trailer and teaser footage during its 2026 press presentation. Early clips showed Bardem’s intimidating performance, eerie coastal visuals, and the suffocating tension surrounding the Bowden family.
