Dylan Clark, the series’ producer, has dropped hints that Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot may not end with just one season. During an interview with Collider, Clark said that there are already conversations going on regarding additional seasons, sparking excitement for what lies ahead in Gotham’s criminal underworld.

The new series is expected to explore Cobblepot’s rise as a crime boss in Gotham, diving deeper into his character than what was seen in The Batman film. According to Clark, there’s a wealth of potential not just in Oz’s story arc, but also in expanding the world of Gotham and its inhabitants. “There’s absolutely more story inside of Oz and other characters in this world,” it was explained by Clark, alluding to the possibility of a richer narrative beyond the first season.

SUGGESTED: Matt Reeves Confirms Colin Farrell’s Penguin in ‘The Batman 2’ But Fans Will Not See 1 Supervillain For A Valid Reason

Adding to the excitement, Matt Reeves has previously indicated that The Penguin will tie into the upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. Clark confirmed this, stating that Cobblepot will appear in some capacity in the sequel, and hinted at the possibility of more to come. As Clark mentioned, “Matt [Reeves] spoke at Comic-Con about how he’s such a great character that Oz has to be in the sequel, and he will be in some fashion…” This has left fans hoping that The Penguin could be more than just a one-off project.

With so much potential for storytelling, the future of Oswald Cobblepot looks brighter than ever. If things go well, viewers may find themselves exploring more of Gotham’s dark corners through Oz’s eyes for seasons to come.

The Penguin Promises To Be a Crucial Connector Between The Batman and Its Sequel

While the show is designed to stand on its own, The Penguin also serves a greater narrative purpose within the larger Batman universe. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc highlighted this in an interview with Entertainment Weekly when she revealed that the series is “the bridge between” the two Batman films. According to her, the series will seamlessly transition into the events of The Batman Part II, allowing fans to experience a more cohesive storyline. LeFranc further elaborated that the series is intended to lead “almost directly into the second film Matt has planned.“

The significance of The Penguin extends beyond being just a standalone series. It will not only build upon the dark, gritty tone established in The Batman but also introduce new characters and conflicts that will be vital for the sequel. Colin Farrell’s story in the series is expected to dive deeper into his rise in Gotham’s criminal underworld, setting up key events that will shape the next phase of the film saga.

The series also boasts an impressive cast, with Cristin Milioti portraying Sofia Falcone, daughter of the infamous mob boss Carmine Falcone. Clancy Brown takes on the role of Salvator Maroni, another notorious figure in Gotham’s crime scene. Additional cast members include Michael Zegen, Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell, bringing an ensemble of talent to the project.

SUGGESTED: Matt Reeves Explains Where Robert Pattinson’s Batman Would Be In Colin Farrell’s ‘The Penguin’ Series

With such a strong lineup and a storyline that directly ties into The Batman sequel, The Penguin is set to be more than just a filler series. It will likely serve as a vital narrative bridge, making it an essential watch for fans looking forward to the continuation of the Batman universe. Fans are eagerly awaiting how the series will shape the future of Gotham and its infamous villains.

The Penguin premieres on HBO on September 19.
