What's Inside?

  • 'Clayface' is set before Superman, making it the first DCU story released out of chronological order.
  • The film introduces Gotham City early, raising questions about Batman’s presence and timeline.
  • Strong hints suggest a connection between Clayface and Creature Commandos within the shared DCU continuity.

The DC Universe has officially stepped into a new era, with its timeline taking shape across films and series. While Superman marked a clear starting point for audiences, upcoming projects continue to expand the narrative in unexpected ways. Among them, Clayface stands out, not only for its horror-driven tone but also for its unusual placement within the broader timeline.

Unlike most DCU entries that follow a forward-moving sequence, Clayface arrives as a chronological outlier. Its position raises key questions about Gotham City, Batman’s presence, and how early events in this universe unfold. With confirmation from James Gunn, the film’s timing adds intrigue to an already layered reboot.

James Gunn has clarified where Clayface sits in the evolving DCU timeline, and the answer shifts expectations. “Before. It’s the first DCU film out of chronological order.” That statement confirms the film takes place prior to the events of Superman, despite releasing much later.

This decision did not stem from the original roadmap. The project gained momentum after a compelling pitch from Mike Flanagan, which led to its development outside the planned sequence. As a result, Clayface becomes a rare exception in a universe designed to move largely in order.

Set within Gotham City, the film offers the first proper look at this iconic location in the rebooted continuity. Yet, its exact placement remains unclear. The trailer avoids modern visual markers, leaving the timeframe deliberately vague. It could unfold years before Superman emerges publicly, or during a period when heroes already exist but remain distant figures.

The story follows Matt Hagan, portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries, whose transformation into Clayface drives the narrative. Whether this occurs before Batman establishes himself in Gotham or during his early years remains unanswered. That ambiguity appears intentional, giving the film space to function as both a character study and a foundational chapter.
