James Gunn’s new DC Universe is moving fast; which will spearhead the highly anticipated animated series for Max, Creature Commandos. Following the series, the new dawn of DC will shine on the studio with several projects lined up for both big and small screens including Ginn’s very own directorial Superman which is slated for 2025 release.

James Gunn and Peter Safran started their new DC Universe with the announcement of several projects and the DC revamp is beginning very soon with Creature Commandos. The new canon, however, will be very different from the previous notion the studios have operated. In a recent exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn shared his intricate plans for the upcoming projects in the studio.

“The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns and All-Star Superman,” Gunn told the outlet. “It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it,” the DC boss added.

Sounds promising, Gunn’s new take on DC may revive the sinking box-office numbers with the recent releases from the studio. Of course, those projects were not from Gunn and Safran’s DC vision but it was very concerning for Warner Brothers. Now, with his Superman which has been under tremendous hype, the box office glory of the superhero brand is expected to regain once again.

James Gunn’s chat with EW also gave away some intricate details of Creature Commandos. The series is about the oddball characters from DC Comics working for Amanda Waller. He compared the characters with Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy which was directed by him before moving to run DC Studios.

“I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos,” Gunn told EW. “That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”

Creature Commandos follows “a group of military super humans composed by a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster and a gorgon.”

Further detailing the narrative, Gunn added, “Part of the fun for me was taking some of the basics of Mary Shelley’s story and bringing them into this story about the spurned relationship between the Bride and Frankenstein.”

“Frankenstein is this incredibly well-spoken intellectual but is still driven by his rage and his anger and his inability to really be a human being, and the inability for the one that he loves not loving him back. That’s what drives him.”

David Harbour plays Frankenstein in the series alongside Indira Varma’s The Bride of Frankenstein. Alan Tudyk takes on the role of Doctor Phosphorous, Nina Mazursky will be played by Zoe Chao with Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn voicing both Weasel and G.I. Robot. “There’s an innocence to G.I. Robot,” Gunn said of G.I. Robot. “I didn’t quite see until Sean stepped into the booth and started creating this character,” he added.

“His choices for G.I. Robot give the character this sweet, mechanic innocence. He’s got this very sad history from World War II. The only time I think he felt at home was with the soldiers that he served with in DC’s alternate history of World War II, where metahumans were involved.”

Although Creature Commandos will officially spearhead the new DC Universe Gunn revealed that his upcoming “humongous epic” Superman will be the “true start of everything” which is a “way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like.” The movie will have references to other DC projects while teasing the upcoming slates and Gunn believes that “it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.” Superman locks the release date of July 11, 2025.

Creature Commandos debuts Max on December 5.
