Deadpool & Wolverine revived all the hopes in Marvel Studios again after a few failures created a huge box-office gap in the studio. The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer movie gained enormous prominence following the surprising cameos of Marvel superheroes and supervillains but several potential cameos were also missing from the movie despite fan’s high expectations. One of them is from Gavin Hood’s 2009 movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Liev Schreiber played Sabertooth in the movie alongside Jackman’s Wolverine but Deadpool & Wolverine brought back Tyler Mane’s Sabertooth who appeared in Bryan Singer’s X-Men as Magneto’s sidekick.
Liev Schreiber Explained Why He Didn’t Appear in Deadpool & Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine crossed the $1 billion mark with ease, thanks to the theater-drawing power of the movie which is loaded with R-rated action and humor complemented by the astonishing trivia filled throughout. Also, the movie is stacked with several stunning cameos including Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, and many more. But the movie missed Liev Schreiber’s Sabertooth. The actor had a chat with Collider recently to promote his recent film Across the River and Into the Trees and explained the reason behind his absence in the Shawn Levy-directed Marvel blockbuster.
“It’s amazing. I can’t begin to tell you what it feels like when people are thinking about something you did and are so appreciative of it that they want you to do it again. To be honest, it’s a lot of work getting your body up to that point. I know I watched Hugh [Jackman] get himself ready again, and I thought, ‘I’m okay to sit by the sidelines.'”
Of course, his return would be in a short cameo and for that, it seems to be a huge work as the actor would have to get into shape for the role. Jackman’s return and shredded physique in the movie was justified as the actor played the title character alongside Reynolds.
Still, Schreiber was surprised after fans campaigned for his return, “I was so surprised that we had that many fans, and I was so surprised that people were campaigning for me to be in the new Deadpool movie,” the actor added.
Deadpool & Wolverine Cameos Are Mostly Nostalgia Treat
Marvel Studios has played the nostalgia card very meticulously in more than one project. Jon Watts’ 2021 blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home which grossed close to $2 billion at the worldwide box office, played the card right bringing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man with some of the iconic villains into the multiversal narrative worked with the movie earning high critical appreciation with 93% solid Rotten Tomatoes score. Deadpool & Wolverine followed a similar ‘nostalgia treat for fans’ strategy and the response was well reflected in the soaring box-office numbers.
Chris Evans returns as The Human Torch after 17 years while giving the idea of his Steve Rogers return, it was a huge surprise and the cameo was certainly hilarious. Wesley Snipes’ Blade return after two decades was another nostalgia treat for fans. Jennifer Garner’s Elektra returned with Channing Tatum as Gambit who after a hardcore struggle could not make his solo Gambit movie.
Jon Favreau was seen as Happy Hogan interviewing Deadpool as he attempted to join the Avengers. Dafne Keen returned as Laura/X-23, Wunmi Mosaku as B-15, a hilarious stock footage cameo of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor created one of the unanswered questions in the movie, “Why was Thor crying?”
Tyler Mane, Aaron Stanford, and several other X-Men characters have appeared with different actors playing the roles, most of the Deadpool 2 characters appeared in the movie as well. In addition to the nostalgia treat, the movie also added several new cameos from Deadpool Corps which includes Blake Lively’s Lady Deadpool and Matthew McConaughey as Cowboypool.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now showing in theaters.
