What's Inside?
- James Gunn confirms development of the next “Superman Saga” film, hinting production could begin soon with David Corenswet returning as Superman.
- The upcoming chapter may connect Superman with Supergirl and Krypto, expanding DCU’s “Gods & Monsters” storyline and setting up future interconnected projects.
- 'Peacemaker' Season 2 will feature guest stars from Superman, directly tying into the broader DC Universe narrative envisioned by Gunn and Safran.
The red carpet premiere of Peacemaker Season 2 wasn’t just about John Cena’s return as the foul-mouthed vigilante. It became the stage for James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, to drop fresh hints about the future of his so-called “Superman Saga.” While the term’s official status is unclear, Gunn confirmed that work is already underway on the next cinematic chapter for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, and production could start sooner than fans expect.
James Gunn’s Next Superman Story Featuring David Corenswet Is Already Taking Shape At DC

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn revealed that he’s finished “a very, very worked-out treatment” for the follow-up to Superman following the success of David Corenswet‘s new DC opener. He stopped short of labeling it a direct sequel, but he was clear about its scope. Gunn said—
“I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Speculation is already swirling about the plot. Industry chatter suggests the story could see Superman teaming up with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and Krypto the Superdog, possibly facing off against Brainiac or even The Authority. Though unconfirmed, the setup would tie neatly into the wider DCU slate, which includes Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026.
For Gunn, Superman is the cornerstone of the new DC Universe. “Superman leads directly into Peacemaker,” he explained.
“It should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show, and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker; it’s incredibly important.”
James Gunn Says The Superman Saga’s Role Is Connected In DCU

Gunn clarified that the Superman Saga is not just a series of isolated films. Instead, it’s the connective tissue for the DCU’s “Gods & Monsters” era. Peacemaker Season 2, premiering August 21 on HBO Max, will introduce multiple characters audiences first met in Superman. “Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters… that we’ve already met in Superman,” Gunn teased.
John Cena backed up Gunn’s vision, noting that Season 2 “is about furthering the narrative” and making every project part of a larger whole. That shift means the DCU will move away from standalone efforts toward an interconnected storytelling model, with Superman at the heart of it.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently called Superman “the beginning of a new era for DC Studios,” praising its $583.2 million global box office haul and strong domestic performance. That success has given Gunn both the momentum and the creative freedom to shape his “Super-Family” roadmap, which may include future Justice League-level team-ups, a new Batman in The Brave and the Bold, and additional character spin-offs for television.
For now, fans can revisit the first chapter when Superman arrives on digital August 15, before Peacemaker returns to continue the saga.
