What's Inside?

  • ABC renews Grey’s Anatomy for season 23, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama after two decades on air.
  • Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd will exit in the season 22 finale, while Ellen Pompeo is expected to return in limited capacity.
  • Episode count remains unconfirmed as budget cuts may reduce episodes, though strong streaming numbers continue to support the show’s long-term future.

More than two decades after it first scrubbed in, Grey’s Anatomy is showing no signs of slowing down. ABC has officially renewed the iconic medical drama for season 23, extending a run that began back in 2005 and cementing its place as the longest-running primetime medical series in television history. The announcement arrived with a playful touch, as several cast members looked skyward in a social media video before the message appeared: “I asked the universe for a sign…” followed by “Grey’s Anatomy returns for season 23.” It felt fitting for a show that has always balanced high-stakes medicine with moments of wonder and reflection.

The renewal is more than just another season order. It is a reminder of how deeply Grey’s Anatomy has embedded itself in pop culture. Even as broadcast ratings have softened over the years, the series continues to thrive in the streaming era. In 2025, it ranked among the most-watched shows across platforms like Hulu and Netflix in the United States, while also topping global charts on Disney’s own services. That kind of reach speaks to both nostalgia and a steady influx of new viewers discovering Grey Sloan Memorial for the first time.

Behind the scenes, the show remains in experienced hands. Showrunner Meg Marinis leads the creative direction, while creator Shonda Rhimes continues to shape its broader vision as an executive producer alongside longtime collaborators. Their influence has helped the series evolve without losing its emotional core.

Still, longevity comes with challenges. Production costs have climbed, and ABC has quietly adjusted its strategy in recent seasons. One noticeable shift has been reducing the number of episodes certain series regulars appear in. Caterina Scorsone, for instance, featured in only 10 of the current season’s 18 episodes, with her character’s absence written into the story as a sabbatical. Season 23 could see a similar approach, especially as reports hint at a potentially shorter episode order, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

Grey’s Anatomy Cast Changes and Ellen Pompeo’s Role

Change has always been part of Grey’s Anatomy, and season 23 will be no different. The upcoming May 7 finale will mark the exit of Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, who have portrayed Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt through some of the show’s most turbulent arcs. Producers have suggested both characters will receive the happy endings they deserve, offering a sense of closure rather than heartbreak.

Beyond those departures, the outlook appears relatively stable. Core cast members such as Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Camilla Luddington, and Caterina Scorsone are reportedly still under contract, though final negotiations are ongoing. The ensemble from season 22, including familiar faces across Grey Sloan, is widely expected to return.

Perhaps the most reassuring update for longtime fans centers on Ellen Pompeo. There has been no indication of her stepping away further from the series. She is expected to continue as Meredith Grey in a limited on-screen capacity, while also serving as narrator and executive producer. Her presence, even in a reduced role, remains a crucial thread tying the show’s past to its present.

As Grey’s Anatomy inches closer to the remarkable 500-episode milestone, its future feels surprisingly open-ended. Fewer episodes, evolving cast dynamics, and shifting viewing habits may shape what comes next. But the heartbeat of the series remains steady. After 22 years, the operating room doors are still open, and fans are clearly not ready to walk away.

The Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale airs on Thursday, May 7, at 10/9c on ABC.
