If you are a fan of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, don’t lose hope, as the DC boss himself did not dismiss the idea of her return in the revamped DC landscape. The door to Gotham’s most chaotic antihero might not be closed after all. While DC Studios co-head James Gunn has been busy shaping a brand-new cinematic universe, he’s dropped just enough hints to keep Harley Quinn fans on the edge of their seats. Margot Robbie’s explosive, unpredictable version of Harley, introduced in 2016’s Suicide Squad, may yet find a place in this reimagined DCU. And Gunn’s words, careful as they are, leave room for plenty of hope.
James Gunn Has An Answer For Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn DC Return

Following the box office debut of Superman, James Gunn’s next release is Peacemaker Season 2, premiering August 21 on HBO Max. The series spins directly out of his 2021 film The Suicide Squad, a title that, despite belonging to the now-retired Snyderverse continuity, still ties into the new DC world. John Cena’s Peacemaker even appeared briefly in Superman, proving that select characters can survive the reboot.
So when Entertainment Weekly pressed James Gunn on whether Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn might return or be recast, his answer was filledwith hope for the character, “That will be revealed down the line.” It wasn’t confirmation, but it wasn’t a refusal either. For fans, that’s enough to keep theories alive.
Gunn hasn’t spoken to Robbie, but he’s clear about one thing: “I would love to work with her again as Harley or someone else.” He also noted, “There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley” in live-action projects—an important detail that subtly reinforces Robbie’s position as the definitive cinematic Harley.
While his lips stayed sealed about Harley’s fate, Gunn openly expressed interest in bringing back Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, suggesting that the right role could secure a return. “I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens.”
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Legacy and What Could Come Next

Margot Robbie has donned Harley’s black-and-red chaos three times— Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). Each appearance extended the character’s pop-culture footprint, with Birds of Prey in particular highlighting Harley’s independence outside Joker’s shadow.
Yet after back-to-back shoots for Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, Robbie admitted she needed a break from the exhausting role. “I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”
Interestingly, Robbie has long championed the idea of Harley being passed on to other actresses, just like Batman or the Joker. “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions… The options are endless.” That vision already took shape with Lady Gaga’s portrayal in Joker: Folie à Deux, proving the character’s adaptability. Of course, Gaga’s character is not in the mainline DC.
Regardless, Robbie nailed the role in her appearances in the three movies in the superhero brand, and fans are inherently excited to see her again in the new DC Universe.
