Game of Thrones, one of HBO’s most successful shows (although several fans were not a fan of the ending), was adapted from George R. R. Martin’s bestselling novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, A Game of Thrones. Created by David Benioff, and D. B. Weiss, Game of Thrones got global acclaim and later a prequel series House of the Dragon.
The same network that brought Game of Thrones also created the astounding zombie-apocalypse hit show The Last of Us but in one regard, both the series would differentiate.
The Last of Us Will Not Follow Game of Thrones’ Adaptation Policy
The Last of Us and Game of Thrones are very different shows but have one thing in common— both the shows have zombies, while GoT zombies are mythical with real-time consciousness, The Last of Us zombies are a uniform fungal network. But that’s beside the point, The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed that they will not go beyond the source materials. For context, The Last of Us is based on the Play Station games of the same name. “As a fan, I’m thrilled that there might be a third Last of Us game,” Mazin once told Deadline.
Mazin and many fans desperately want the third game from the series but so far there has not been any word of confirmation. “As the co-creator of this television show, there’s no world where I would want our show to go beyond the source material that people have in the world,” Mazin told the outlet.
“Our show as people know it on HBO is going to cover the material from the second game and then quite a bit of material that is relevant to that story but, as I said, wanders down interesting new paths, unseen stories that were told within the context of that games material.”

This is pure contrast to what Game of Thrones did, the HBO drama covered the five published novels in George R.R. Martin’s series and went beyond, the author is yet to finish the sixth and seventh books in the acclaimed book series.
Will There Be A Part 3 Of The Last of Us Game?
Head of Naughty Dog (the studio behind The Last of Us game), Neil Druckmann hinted to Deadline that the plans for a third game in the series are still vague. Obviously, if the game were in development, there would be more stories to tell for The Last of Us showrunners, but so far, there is no word hinting at any development/production update. “Our focus is the two games,” Druckmann told the outlet.
“As Craig mentioned,” the Naughty Dog head continued. “There’s quite a bit of material there that we’re taking our time with, and we’re looking at each piece individually to make sure it’s got its own arc, its own journey that the characters go on, but there is a grander plan that ties all the seasons together,” he added.
Further, the game studio head gave away an intricate detail of season 2 of the Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey starrer HBO show. “The two stories are so interconnected that inevitably we’re going to be touching on things from the first season or the first game because there is a continuation of those characters,” he said of revisiting the premise of the first season.
But as far the detailed narrative of the upcoming season is concerned, The Last of Us showrunners are rather insistent on telling the story their own way which is enough to maintain the curiosity among fans.
The Last of Us season 2 release date was not announced as of writing the piece.
