  • Cassie and Maddy reluctantly work together to save Nate, though their rescue arrives moments too late.
  • The character's death completely changes 'Euphoria’s emotional power structure heading into the explosive Season 3 finale.

Spoiler Alert: Euphoria Season 3 Episode 7 features a shocking character death that changes the emotional direction of the series.

The penultimate episode of Euphoria Season 3 delivers the kind of chaos that leaves viewers stunned long after the credits roll. Episode 7, titled Rain or Shine, pushes nearly every major character into emotional freefall while setting up a brutal finale. The hour revolves around fear, desperation, violence, and consequences, though nothing lands harder than the shocking death of Nate Jacobs. After seasons of manipulation, rage, and destruction, the show removes one of its most volatile figures in horrifying fashion.

The episode also deepens the emotional instability surrounding Cassie and Rue. Cassie spirals further while trying to save Nate from loan sharks, and Rue continues searching for meaning amid mounting danger. By the final scene, the emotional balance of the series has completely shifted. One death changes the future of the story, and the fallout now hangs over every surviving character heading into the finale.

Rain or Shine wastes no time throwing its characters into crisis. Jacob Elordi’s Nate’s financial collapse finally catches up with him after weeks of threats and violent intimidation linked to the million-dollar debt he owes loan shark Naz. What began as a business gamble tied to a retirement community project becomes a death sentence after construction halts unexpectedly.

The latest episode of Euphoria reveals that Nate has been buried alive inside a coffin beneath the Sun Settlers construction site. A narrow drainpipe serves as his only source of air and light while Cassie desperately scrambles to save him. Naz gives her 72 hours to produce the money, threatening both her life and Nate’s survival.

Cassie turns to Maddy for help, which becomes one of the episode’s most emotionally complicated turns. Their history remains messy and painful, yet Maddy still steps in when Cassie reaches her breaking point. Maddy approaches Alamo, hoping he can settle the debt and prevent further bloodshed. The situation escalates once Alamo arrives at the burial site carrying what appears to be the ransom money.

The exchange quickly turns violent. Alamo shoots Naz after revealing the cash bag is filled with playing cards instead of real money. Chaos erupts around the grave as Artur begins digging Nate out. For a brief moment, the episode creates hope that Nate might survive.

Then the horror arrives.

When the coffin finally opens, Nate is already dead. A rattlesnake coils around his body after entering through the drainpipe and biting him while he was trapped underground. The image becomes one of the most disturbing moments the series has produced. His swollen tongue, lifeless eyes, and blue-tinted face confirm there is no rescue coming.

Who Dies In Euphoria Season 3 Episode 7?

The major death in Episode 7 is Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs, one of the defining characters of Euphoria since the beginning. Nate does not die from dehydration, suffocation, or execution. Instead, the show takes a darker and stranger route by killing him through a rattlesnake bite while buried alive underground. Strange, huh? Well, it is what it is.

The death feels shocking because Nate has spent years functioning as the emotional engine behind many of the show’s ugliest conflicts. His manipulation damaged relationships across the series, especially involving Cassie, Maddy, and Jules. Even when viewers despised him, his presence carried enormous dramatic weight.

Episode 7 strips away Nate’s control completely. Earlier in the season, his debt already led to horrifying punishment, including losing parts of his body to violent collectors. By the time Rain or Shine reaches its climax, Nate is helpless, terrified, and isolated. No amount of money or influence can save him.

Cassie’s reaction adds another painful layer to the ending. Her desperate effort to save Nate collapses seconds before success arrives. She reaches the coffin, believing there is still time, only to discover she has already lost him. Sydney Sweeney plays the moment with complete emotional exhaustion rather than melodrama, making the scene even more unsettling.

Why Was Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs Killed Off?

Killing Nate before the finale changes the structure of the entire series. For years, Nate represented fear, control, toxic masculinity, and emotional violence inside Euphoria. Removing him forces every remaining character into unfamiliar territory.

The creative choice also reflects how far the season has pushed its themes of consequence and self-destruction. Nate spent years surviving situations that destroyed other people emotionally. Episode 7 finally removes that protection. His death does not arrive heroically or peacefully. It arrives through panic, isolation, and helplessness.

Series creator Sam Levinson reportedly envisioned Nate dying while buried alive as a tribute to classic kidnapping thrillers. The rattlesnake idea later evolved into the final version seen onscreen. That creative decision transformed the sequence into something far more disturbing and unforgettable.

“It was one of those gorgeous L.A. days where it was perfect weather. We’re listening to Otis Redding. The windows are down and we’re driving to Warner Brothers and I’m looking out the window,” Levinson told Esquire.

“I just had this image of a rattlesnake coming towards this pipe. He’s banging and the snake can sense the movement in the ground. And I thought, What if the snake goes into the pipe and then he’s stuck inside the coffin with this rattlesnake?”

The showrunner added:

“It’s sort of a funny moment where you realize that not all dark scenes come from a dark place. I turned to Ash and I said, ‘I think I got it.’ And I explained how Nate dies in this sequence. She goes, ‘That’s what you’ve been thinking about?’”

Nate’s death also reshapes the stakes heading into Episode 8. Cassie appears emotionally shattered. Maddy remains trapped in dangerous circumstances. Rue continues struggling against addiction, trauma, and increasingly violent threats surrounding her world. The finale no longer feels like a standard ending. It feels like emotional fallout after a disaster.
