“It’s so dumb”: ‘God of War’ Creator Fumes Over Prime Video Series’ First Look at Kratos

David Jaffe criticises Prime Video’s first look at Kratos as misguided, while still backing the show’s quality, as Amazon expands the 'God of War' series with major Norse characters.

Prime Video’s live-action God of War has barely begun filming, yet it has already sparked fierce debate. The first official image of Ryan Hurst as Kratos, crouched in the woods beside Atreus, divided fans online. Some praised its fidelity to the 2018 game. Others questioned the staging, the costume, and even whether the image had been altered. Now, franchise creator David Jaffe has entered the conversation, and he did not hold back.

His criticism has amplified scrutiny around the adaptation. At the same time, Jaffe voiced strong faith in the creative team, signalling that one awkward promotional image may not define the series. With new cast members joining the Norse saga and production underway, the show faces a delicate task, it would be to win over loyal gamers while expanding its mythic world for television.

David Jaffe, who created the original God of War games, reacted bluntly to the image released by Prime Video. On his YouTube channel, he criticized the pose and tone of the reveal.

“I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, [but] it’s so dumb. But let’s be incredibly clear, okay? Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s so bad in so many ways, which we’ll talk about in a moment. And Ron Moore is awesome, who is the showrunner… This guy is a juggernaut of a talented fellow. I have absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show.”

Jaffe stressed that his issue was not with Ryan Hurst personally. Instead, he argued that the framing undermined Kratos’ imposing presence. “Kratos in this pose with this expression, not the guy’s face, but this expression, he just looks stupid.”

“If you’re going to reveal, to most people, a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they’ve never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?”

He even added, “Maybe that’s conscious. Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story. And if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, ‘I don’t want to watch that show.’ Ok maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s s******g in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like.”

Away from the controversy, the series is quietly building an ambitious ensemble. Louis Cunningham joins as Modi, while Ben Chapple will portray Magni. Island Austin steps in as Thrud, and Evelyn Miller takes on Gna, Odin’s Valkyrie commander. These roles expand Thor’s lineage far earlier than the 2018 game did.

The original Norse chapter focused tightly on Kratos and Atreus. Gods such as Ólafur Darri Ólafsson’s Thor and Mandy Patinkin’s Odin largely loomed in the background until God of War Ragnarök. By introducing Modi, Magni, Thrud and Gna in season one, the adaptation signals a broader canvas. It appears ready to explore Asgard’s politics alongside the father and son’s journey.

God of War remains in production with no confirmed release date. The debate over one image may fade. The real test will arrive when Kratos and Atreus step onto the screen in full.
