Jennifer Lawrence’s No Hard Feelings Is Now Streaming On Max

Jennifer Lawrence stepped into unfamiliar territory with No Hard Feelings, a film that leans fully into adult comedy. The movie earned over $87 million worldwide against a modest budget, proving there is still an appetite for theatrical comedies with a clear edge. Now stream it on HBO Max.
Lawrence plays Maddie, a struggling bartender facing the loss of her childhood home. Her desperation leads her to an unusual job offer from wealthy parents who want someone to date their socially awkward son before he leaves for college. The role earned Lawrence a Golden Globe nomination.
Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, the film features a strong ensemble cast, including Andrew Barth Feldman, Matthew Broderick, and Hasan Minhaj. Lawrence also served as a producer, taking an active role behind the scenes.
What Is No Hard Feelings About?

At its core, No Hard Feelings is a coming-of-age story told through a deliberately outrageous lens. Maddie answers a listing placed by anxious parents who want their introverted son Percy, to gain confidence before college. What begins as a transactional arrangement quickly becomes more complicated. Here’s the synopsis–
“On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to ‘date’ their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.”
The film mixes awkward humour with emotional beats, exploring loneliness, privilege, and the pressure to grow up.
What Jennifer Lawrence Said About No Hard Feelings?

Lawrence embraced the film’s controversial tone, fully aware it would divide audiences. “I think it’s time for a good old-fashioned laugh and it really is hard to make a comedy where you’re not offending people,” she told Sky News.
“Everybody in some sense will be offended by this film — you’re welcome.”
Her co-star Feldman acknowledged the tightrope the film walks. “We need to be able to engage with being offended. There was and is like a big overcorrect because we realized there were so many things that we were joking about that we shouldn’t be,” he said.
“I think this movie does a really good job of continuing to push limits while still engaging with the conversation that the things that these people are doing are wrong and not a good idea.”
Lawrence also reflected on the tone of the comedy itself. “Something we learned from the old-time comedies is mean comedy is not really funny … making somebody feel bad about themselves – other than me making fun of me. But the way that we did it is fine, we figured it out.”
With No Hard Feelings, Lawrence took a clear creative risk. The result is a film that leans into discomfort, invites debate, and reminds viewers that mainstream comedy can still surprise.
