Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 gets another update as the project is reportedly in talks with MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to helm the highly anticipated Marvel and Sony collaboration. Jon Watts who directed the three installments of the franchise, has left the blockbuster movie series, and since Marvel and Sony have been on a mission to book a new director for the upcoming movie.
Spider-Man 4 Is Looking To Book Destin Daniel Cretton As Director
Despite high anticipation, Spider-Man 4 has undergone several devastating updates as most fans were awestruck after the mishaps the project has endured. With Tom Holland’s condition to return to the franchise (of course, his demand for a great script will elevate the prowess of the movie which is a good thing) and the dual Hollywood strikes have delayed the project. Now as, two of the upcoming Avengers movies— Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars have locked respective release dates, Marvel and Sony are reportedly looking to release Spider-Man 4 ahead of Secret Wars.
However, the departure of Jon Watts has pushed the project into further delay. Still, an official release date for the movie has yet to be announced. But still, having a director on board for the project will strengthen the hype for the project.
However, The Hollywood Reporter which broke the news shared that both Marvel Studios and Sony have not commented on the new director. Destin Daniel Cretton is already acquainted with Marvel Studios as he previously directed Simu Liu in Shang-Chi who is also expected to return to helm the movie’s sequel which Liu recently confirmed that the project is still happening.
Spider-Man 4 will come from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Marvel boss Kevin Feige and former Sony head Amy Pascal are producing the joint venture. With Holland, Zendaya is also expected to return.
The Real Reason Why Jon Watts Left Spider-Man Franchise
Spider-Man franchise has been a huge blockbuster with the third installment claiming nearly $2 billion at the global box office. The franchise has also been a huge critical success, still, the franchise director who helmed the first three movies has surprisingly left Marvel Studios. He was also expected to direct the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps but the project went to Matt Shakman. So, why did the director leave the highly popular venture?
“Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me,” Watts previously said (via Deadline). “I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life,” the director added.
