What's Inside?
- James Gunn describes 'Supergirl' as a space fantasy, loosely inspired by Tom King’s 'Woman of Tomorrow,' without strict comic adherence.
- Craig Gillespie’s direction and Milly Alcock’s performance shape 'Supergirl’s distinct cosmic tone within the DC Universe.
- 'Supergirl' is positioned as a strategic bridge in the DCU timeline, leading directly into 'Man of Tomorrow' and the introduction of Brainiac.
The DC Universe entered a new phase with James Gunn in the driver’s seat. Superman’s 2025 arrival set a steady path for the superhero brand under Warner Bros. Now, Supergirl stands ready to extend the same momentum with cosmic scale, emotional arc, and, of course, creative restraint. Early footage of the movie hints at space-bound spectacle, yet the story’s ambition just scratched the surface of what we have seen so far.
As anticipation builds toward its 2026 release, Supergirl appears positioned as more than a standalone adventure. The project reflects a broader philosophy guiding DC Studios. Undoubtedly, the whole DC reboot was a bold move, but Gunn’s first movie in the new DC paid off, and with another major risk, Gunn’s superhero brand is moving in a different direction. We all know, Gunn jumped ship from Marvel after directing the iconic Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy, and the DC boss has recently name-dropped his Marvel franchise while promoting Supergirl.
James Gunn Explains Supergirl Connection To Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

James Gunn has remained careful about ownership. While he oversees DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, he has consistently framed Supergirl as a director-driven film. Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, Gunn credited Craig Gillespie’s leadership and creative control.
He also addressed the tonal comparisons, drawing attention online. Gunn described the film’s genre in familiar terms while clarifying its foundation.
“I think it’s a space fantasy, which is like ‘Guardians’ in a way, but it’s based on the Tom King book, but it doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there.”
Milly Alcock‘s Supergirl leans into a sci-fi setting layered with music-driven energy. It is not hard to remember that a similar choice echoes Gunn’s Marvel work. The source material, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, offers a wandering protagonist shaped by grief and moral uncertainty. The film adapts that essence while allowing room for surprise.
Gillespie’s track record with character-focused stories and stylised rebellion brings texture to Kara Zor-El’s journey. Visual cues, including a familiar-looking Walkman, reinforce the film’s personality without overshadowing its emotional spine. Gunn also singled out the lead performance, saying, “I love Milly Alcock in the movie,”
Why Supergirl Is Going To Be DC’s Most Important Film After Superman

Supergirl is going to be DC’s most important film after Superman. DC and Marvel now move on parallel tracks, each responding to shifting audience expectations. Superman’s $616 million box office run surpassed Marvel’s three 2025 releases.
Marvel’s upcoming slate leans heavily on legacy characters and nostalgia-driven events. But it would be unjust to say that they lack any hype; in fact, Marvel slates have always been in the driving seat in terms of superhero movies or shows. Still, DC’s approach is different. Projects such as Supergirl, Clayface, and Lanterns explore tone and genre range, creating variety without flattening identity.
So, DC’s Supergirl will be the most important film for the studio in 2026 as it will be in direct competition with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And later, Avengers: Doomsday.
Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery has raised questions about stability and creative direction. Gunn recently addressed the speculation.
“Do I have hopes? No. I really don’t, because everything is unknown. I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. So I hope and pray for the best. I also — I’ve been through these sorts of changes so many times…Always be careful what you wish for because you don’t really know until you know. And I hope it goes well. I think there’s exciting — every direction has really exciting things for DC, so I’m excited about where it’s going to go.”
Now, DC’s roadmap already extends toward Man of Tomorrow in 2027, with Brainiac positioned as a defining antagonist. Supergirl serves as a connective chapter, but again, the fate of the fresh character will depend on the reception of the audience.
Supergirl is slated for a June 26 release.
