When a new comic book movie gets announced, die-hard fans quickly come to throw many speculations and theories regarding the movie. And same goes for James Gunn’s Superman reboot. However, now all rumors and other theories come to an end as the man himself, James Gunn clears everything.
James Gunn Debunks Superman Villain Rumors
Per DC Studios, Superman follows the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
“We got James Gunn and Peter (Safran) working very hard on DC, which is going to be a very big growth driver for this company,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoke last year. “We are very bullish on DC. The Superman script first draft is done. Gunn is on a mission from god. It is a really good moment to prove out on DC what we got and how strong it is globally for long-term sustainable growth.” (Via THR)
David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been cast as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane respectively. And, with each passing day, new rumors started swirling about who would be the villain.
James Gunn took to Threads to debunk all those rumors and said that Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor will indeed be the main antagonist in the upcoming Superman film.
“The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this. There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention. So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)“

Lex has been a villain in many other films, but bringing an actor of Nicholas Hoult’s status, it will definitely see some fresh perspective in the character.
What Is The Progress Of Superman?
The highly anticipated movie has started filming in Svalbard, Norway. While speaking to the Norwegian outlet Svalbardposten (via Deadline), Gunn said:
”We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard], which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”
He also stated that filming took place from eight in the morning until around four in the afternoon every day.
“We have had some who have been curious, yes, who have stood and watched. But that’s perfectly fine. And that’s a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can make money from by selling online.”
And, now teasing fans, Gunn said that DC is “almost ready” to show it to us even though there is lots of work to be done.
“And I’m almost ready to show it to you (even though we’re probably only 18% or so through it),” he added on Threads.
Superman will also star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.
Superman is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
