Christopher Nolan is set to return to the director’s chair with another ambitious project under his sleeve. A recent report from Variety revealed that the acclaimed director is looking to star his previous collaborator Matt Damon for the third time. According to sources telling Variety, Universal is planning an Imax release for the upcoming Nolan movie on July 17, 2026.

It is also revealed that Nolan is set to write and will produce with his wife and long-time collaborator, Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner. So far, details of the project are under wraps.

Following his departure from Warner Brothers, Nolan landed on Universal Pictures with his 2023 movie Oppenheimer which went on to earn a whopping $975.6 million worldwide. The movie was also highly praised by critics and claimed a stunning seven Oscar wins including the Best Director for Nolan. The movie had a total of 13 Oscar nominations.

Damon played General Leslie Groves, a United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) officer and director of the Manhattan Project— a crucial role in Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Previously, the actor shared that he is always ready for Nolan even during his potential hiatus from acting. “This is going to sound made up, but it’s actually true,” Damon told Entertainment Weekly detailing an incident with his wife about working with Nolan.

“I had — not to get too personal — negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off. I had been in ‘Interstellar’ and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn’t in the rotation, but I actually negotiated in couples therapy — this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called. This is without knowing whether or not he was working on anything, because he never tells you. He just calls you out of the blue. And so, it was a moment in my household,” the actor said.

Keeping that in mind, it is possible that Damon would seal the deal with the Oscar-winning director for the potential blockbuster. Nolan is known for his acute blend of art of great storytelling with commercially viable elements. Nolan’s films have earned over $6 billion globally making him one of the box-office magnates in Hollywood.
