Britney Spears’ Arrest: What Happened in the DUI Incident
According to records from the Ventura Sheriff’s Office, Spears was arrested shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. Law enforcement later confirmed that the arrest stemmed from a traffic stop carried out by the California Highway Patrol’s Moorpark Area.
Authorities say a black BMW 430i had been reported to the Ventura Communications Center for driving erratically and at a high rate of speed. Officers pulled the vehicle over and identified Spears as the sole occupant.
In a press release issued by Public Information Officer Ryan Ayers, investigators detailed the sequence of events that followed. After stopping the vehicle, officers noticed signs that the singer might be impaired and conducted a series of field sobriety tests.
She “was subsequently arrested for a violation of California Vehicle Code section 23152(g), driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol” and booked.
The CHP said the case remains under investigation and that chemical test results have not yet been finalized.
Spears was held overnight and released shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
A source close to the situation told PEOPLE that the singer was struggling emotionally following the incident. “She’s very emotional and regretful this morning,” the source said.
In a public statement, a representative for Spears addressed the situation directly.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for Spears tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
The representative also emphasized that Spears’ family will be closely involved in supporting her moving forward.
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
Spears shares two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
