The wait is over for fans of the iconic superhero! James Gunn, the director of the upcoming DC Universe Superman film, has finally unveiled the full costume for David Corenswet, who will be portraying the Man of Steel. This marks the first official look at Corenswet in the updated Superman suit, generating a lot of excitement for the highly anticipated movie.
First look at David Corenswet as Superman
Superman fans have been given a first look at David Corenswet in the iconic Superman costume, thanks to director James Gunn, who revealed the image on social media. This is a rare event, as glimpses of the leading man in a Superman movie are treated with the same anticipation as the reveal of a new James Bond.

Throughout Superman’s nearly 50 year history on the big screen, only a few actors have donned the iconic suit: Christopher Reeve (1978-1987), Brandon Routh (2006), and Henry Cavill (2013-2022).
The unveiling of the suit likely coincides with the filming transitioning from the closed set at Trilith Studios in Georgia to on-location shoots in Macon and Cleveland. Interestingly, the suit appears heavily inspired by the design from the 2011 DC Comics’ New 52 reboot, with some minor variations.
David Corenswet, already a familiar face in the television world, has appeared in a number of Ryan Murphy productions, including The Politician and Hollywood. However, his role as Superman is expected to elevate his career to unprecedented heights.
The Superman film, previously titled Superman: Legacy, is currently being filmed at a private, heavily-guarded sound stage in Atlanta. This explains the lack of leaks and set photos that typically accompany big-budget comic book movies.
What Fans Say About Superman’s First Look?
The Superman cast features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and newcomers like David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. Other cast include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Addtionally, Skyler Gisondo joined the cast as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.
More recently Pruitt Taylor Vince was cast as Jonathan ‘Pa’ Kent, while Neva Howell signed on to play Martha ‘Ma’ Kent.
As soon as the first look revealed, fans share mixed reviews on the suit. While some said it looks amazing, some said they miss Henry Cavill as Superman.

Per DC Studios, Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Superman is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.
