The spotlight has found Melania Trump again, and this time it is not from a campaign stage but the big screen. Her new documentary, Melania, has drawn headlines, debate, and no shortage of commentary, including from her husband, Donald Trump. Released by Amazon MGM Studios and directed by Brett Ratner, the film tracks the intense final stretch before Trump’s second inauguration. Its box office run, mixed reception, and political undertones have turned a personal portrait into something much larger and far more complicated.
Melania Documentary Becomes a Talking Point for Donald Trump

Donald Trump has not hidden his delight over his wife’s cinematic moment. Speaking at his “Board of Peace” event in Washington, D.C., he leaned into the idea of Melania as Hollywood royalty.
“She has a very successful movie out right now, like number one. Can you believe this?” Trump said dring his “Board of Peace” event in Washington, D.C. (via Daily Beast). “Big movie star, and I always say it’s trouble, because I always say there’s not room in one family for two stars. I told her that we can’t have two stars in one family, so I don’t know what that means. It’s not good.”
He doubled down on his pride, insisting the documentary had struck a powerful chord. Trump added he’s proud of the real Melania, noting the documentary “Melania” has “become the biggest-selling documentary in 20 years. The theaters are all packed. Women, especially, they go back, and they see it two or three times, four times.”
The film itself offers an unusually close look at Melania during a tense transition period. According to the studio, it was “filmed in real time during the transition period,” and “captures the immediacy and pressure of preparing for one of the most scrutinized roles in American public life.” For viewers, it presents both the polish and the pressure behind a role often defined by distance and silence.
Melania Documentary Draws Divided Reactions Despite Strong Audience Support

Commercially, the Melania documentary opened with promise. It earned $7 million domestically in its first weekend and eventually grossed $16 million worldwide. Yet momentum slipped quickly, with a steep second weekend drop. Audience data revealed a clear demographic tilt, with most viewers being older women.
The real divide appeared in the reviews. Critics were harsh, leaving the film with just 11 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences delivered a striking 98 percent approval. The gap sparked speculation about manipulation, which the platform firmly rejected. “There has been no bot manipulation on the audience reviews for the ‘Melania’ documentary,” Rotten Tomatoes’ parent company Versant said in a statement to Variety, denying such claims. “Reviews displayed on the Popcornmeter are VERIFIED reviews, meaning it has been verified that users have bought a ticket to the film.”
The controversy did not stop there. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel openly questioned the film’s backing, while political observers debated its timing and intent. Meanwhile, comparisons emerged with Becoming, the documentary centered on Michelle Obama, highlighting how differently audiences respond to stories shaped by politics.
For now, Melania continues its theatrical run and will later stream on Amazon Prime Video. Whether viewed as a personal portrait, political symbol, or cultural lightning rod, one thing is clear. Melania Trump’s quiet presence has, at least for this moment, found a very loud audience.
