After slicing through streaming charts with its chilling revival, Dexter: Resurrection is officially back. Michael C. Hall Leads Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 as Fans Rally for James Doakes’ Comeback

Michael C Hall has recently announced the extension of the second season of Dexter: Resurrection.
“We’ve been greenlit for another season. The writers room is assembling now, and details will be forthcoming. But I wanted to be the first to let you know that the story continues.”
The renewal comes amid a turbulent time for the Dexter franchise. While Dexter: Resurrection thrives, its sibling series Dexter: Original Sin met an abrupt end following the Paramount-Skydance merger. But even as one branch withers, another blooms— and fans are already voicing a passionate plea for one shocking return: Sergeant James Doakes.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips, the mastermind behind the original Dexter and its resurrection, returns to steer Season 2. Known for his darkly poetic storytelling, Phillips hinted that the upcoming season will dive even deeper into Dexter’s fractured psyche. The first installment of Resurrection picked up after the events of Dexter: New Blood, where the titular killer survived a near-fatal gunshot and relocated to New York to shadow his estranged son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).
The ensemble cast added even more intrigue, featuring Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, and Krysten Ritter— along with a surprise return from David Zayas as Angel Batista, who continues to hunt the elusive Bay Harbor Butcher. The series attracted 4.4 million viewers in its debut week, signaling that Dexter Morgan’s deadly charisma remains unbroken.
Yet, what has truly set the fandom ablaze is the growing online movement demanding the return of one unforgettable character: Sergeant James Doakes. Played by Erik King, Doakes was the sharp-tongued Miami Metro officer who first saw through Dexter’s facade. He famously confronted the blood-spatter expert before meeting a tragic end in Season 2— his death wrongly framing him as the Bay Harbor Butcher.
Fans argue that with a title like Resurrection, there’s no better opportunity to bring Doakes back. Social media threads and Reddit discussions are buzzing with variations of the same sentiment.
“Unless he’s brought back, the show won’t feel complete,” one fan reacted on X.

Clyde Phillips Responds to Dexter Franchise Shake-Ups and Future Storylines

While fans celebrate Dexter’s return, Clyde Phillips didn’t hold back about the behind-the-scenes turbulence. After Paramount+ abruptly canceled Dexter: Original Sin despite an earlier renewal, Phillips admitted,
“It was a tough phone call that I got. They had already picked up the show, and I had informed all the writers and all the actors. Then they un-picked it up. … It wasn’t handled well, and I’m not happy about it.”
Still, Phillips is focused on crafting a compelling continuation for Resurrection. The writers room, now officially open, is reportedly exploring storylines that could reconnect Dexter with his haunting past— making a Doakes return more than just wishful thinking.
The symbolic weight of such a move would be powerful. Doakes, after all, was the only one who ever truly saw Dexter for what he was. Bringing him back, even as a spectral adversary, would add psychological tension and poetic justice to a story that thrives on both.
As Hall himself teased, “There’s more to come … the story continues.”
