More than a decade after Avatar first reshaped cinematic storytelling, James Cameron is now ready to push the boundaries through animation. As fans await the next live-action installment, Avatar: Fire & Ash, the visionary director has revealed plans to expand the Na’vi universe into a bold new realm. With an animated anthology series in talks, Cameron aims to unlock stories beyond what live-action can contain, expanding the universe with stories rich in mythology, emotion, and visual imagination, set deep within the world of Pandora.
James Cameron Hints at Expanding ‘Avatar’ Universe with Ambitious Animated Anthology Series

James Cameron isn’t slowing down when it comes to expanding the Avatar universe. As the Avatar: Fire & Ash trailer is out, the legendary filmmaker is already planting seeds for a new direction. It would be an animated anthology series set within the world of Pandora. Not content with just blockbuster films and theme park rides, Cameron now envisions a broader canvas to explore untold stories, character backstories, and much more.
Speaking exclusively to Empire, Cameron shared that he’s discussed the concept with Disney.
“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world. There might even be an animated feature in there—it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.”
For inspiration, he looked to The Animatrix, the acclaimed companion to The Matrix films. “These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar,” he explained.
Cameron continued,
“You could go anywhere you want. Backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition.”
While the project remains in its early stages, Cameron is actively searching for “boutique filmmakers” and animators who are passionate about the world of Avatar. “We haven’t done much with that yet,” he admitted. “We’re still gathering our stories and that sort of thing.”
Considering how Avatar has already made its mark in gaming with Frontiers of Pandora and theme parks with “Pandora – The World of Avatar,” an animated anthology feels like the natural next leap, free from the constraints of live-action production, yet rich in emotional and visual potential.
Avatar: Fire & Ash Trailer Is Out, Offers First Look at Expansive New Chapter in the Franchise

The official trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash has dropped, and it’s nothing short of a spectacle. Returning to the big screen are Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), who now face a ruthless new enemy: the Ash People. Led by the fiery Varang (Oona Chaplin), this tribe threatens not only Pandora’s peace but also its very soul.
“You can’t live like this, baby — in hate!” Jake cries out to Neytiri in one of the trailer’s most powerful moments. The visuals—fiery volcanoes, ash-covered forests, and tribal war dances—signal a darker, more volatile tone for this chapter. “Your goddess has no dominion here,” Varang sneers at Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), suggesting a crisis of faith is brewing amid the chaos.
Cameron teased the emotional depth of the story earlier at D23–
“It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before.”
The Ash People, unlike the oceanic Metkayina from The Way of Water, are forged in fire and fury, offering a stark contrast to Pandora’s natural beauty.
New cast members like Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis join a returning ensemble including Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, and Britain Dalton. The trailer also hints at tensions between clans and a growing conflict with human forces still exploiting Pandora’s resources.
Visually, Fire & Ash looks to surpass even its record-breaking predecessors. Fans and critics alike have been struck by the trailer’s beauty, scale, and emotional weight.
Cameron is already sketching out Avatar 4, Avatar 5, and even concepts for 6. But with the addition of animated storytelling, fans might soon get to see even more corners of this epic universe.
