As per an exclusive report by Variety, Dead Boy Detectives will not be renewed for its second season. Based on the Sandman universe, the show did get a little traction making its way into the Netflix Top 10 English TV charts, and remained in the position for three weeks after its release on April 25 this year. Notably, The Sandman character Death played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, has a cameo in the later series.

However, despite claiming the top two spot on the chart, the show only garnered 3.1 million views, in the first week itself the show went down to the third spot with a total view of 4.7 million and in the third week, it dropped to 1.8 million views eventually falling off the chart.

Based on Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner’s Dead Boy Detectives, the series George Rexstrew as Edwin Payne and Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland. The narrative follows the duo running a Dead Boy Detectives agency who share a subtle bond of friendship. The two teenagers solve mysteries of surrounding ghosts with their human partners who could see them. The adventure comedy or mystery series is also jeweled with comedy. The series has a promising 92% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Variety’s report, the show based on DC characters did not fit into the grand vision of the new DC universe established by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Later, it was sold to Netflix as a part of Sandman Universe. As for The Sandman, it was a huge hit on the streamer and the second season of the show is underway.

Dead Boy Detectives Showrunner Explained Making Dead Boy Detectives A Queer Supernatural Show

Apart from the adventure and comic elements dominating the series, Dead Boy Detectives possesses a romantic undertone. Showrunner Steve Yockey previously spoke with Out Magazine sharing that the representation of it was quite important to him and he personally pushed for it to make it happen. “Two things. Representation matters, especially right now, it feels like we’re in a little bit of a regressive time. Not a little bit… a regressive time,” Yockey told the outlet. “So that’s obviously important, but it’s important to present different gay stories,” he added.

“Some of the characters are queer, and they’re just queer and it’s a part of their life. Some of them are discovering their identity. There’s a lot of variety and types of queer representation. That’s really important too because every story can’t be a coming out story. After you come out. You have to live your life. So it’s nice for people to be able to watch a show where being queer is a piece of it, but they’re also solving cases, fighting monsters, trying to avoid death. A lot of stuff is going on.”

Dead Boy Detectives also stars Kassius Nelson, Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, Yuyu Kitamura, Ruth Connell, Lukas Gage, and David Iacono.
