The global sensation KPop Demon Hunters has taken Netflix by storm, blending catchy K-pop beats with thrilling supernatural action. Fans have been left mesmerized by the animated musical film, but those hoping for a live-action adaptation may be disappointed. Creator and co-director Maggie Kang recently revealed that bringing the story into a live-action format simply wouldn’t capture the magic of the original.
Live-Action KPop Demon Hunters Is Off the Table

KPop Demon Hunters follows HUNTR/X, a fictional all-girl K-pop group who balance chart-topping performances with hunting soul-eating demons. Their biggest threat comes from Saja Boys, a rival boy band secretly made up of demons. The story combines humor, music, and breathtaking action sequences, creating a unique experience that has resonated with audiences worldwide.
“The joy of animation is how far you can push and elevate what’s possible,” said co-director Chris Appelhans in a BBC interview. He explained that animation allows the characters to perform “impossibly great attributes”—like singing, performing acrobatics, and free-falling through the sky—without ever feeling out of place. Maggie Kang added, “There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation. It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me.”
The film’s soundtrack has also become a phenomenon, with three tracks—“Golden,” “Your Idol,” and “Soda Pop”—landing in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success has only fueled speculation about potential awards recognition, with Appelhans joking, “The title alone is obviously Oscar bait.”
What the Future Holds for KPop Demon Hunters

While fans may not see the characters in live-action, a sequel is very much on the horizon. Kang teased that the story has more to explore, noting, “There’s definitely more we can do with these characters in this world. It will be a story that deserves to be a sequel, and it will be something that we want to see.”
Early talks between Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix for a follow-up began shortly after the film’s record-breaking performance. The movie became Netflix’s most-watched film of all time and earned $18 million during its sing-along theatrical release, marking the streamer’s first-ever box office win. The lead trio—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—are voiced by Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo, bringing life and personality to the characters in ways that live-action might struggle to match.
Kang and Appelhans’ decision to keep KPop Demon Hunters in animation underscores how integral the medium is to the story. By blending music, comedy, and action with limitless visual creativity, the film has set a new standard for animated storytelling. Fans may have to wait longer for sequels, but one thing is clear: the magic of HUNTR/X is best experienced in its original animated form.
