Whatever Cillian Murphy decides to do, it turns into gold. And, now he is an Oscar-winner too. People might praise Murphy for the brilliance he brought into Christopher Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer as the lead actor. But he already became a darling to us with his performance as Tommy Shelby in the BBC period drama series Peaky Blinders (2013–2022).
Peaky Blinders Movie Promises a Bigger Budget than the Series with a Stellar Cast
It was one of the most love shows while it lasted for six seasons in between 2013 to 2022. But the good news is that Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby is coming back to give a fitting conclusion to the historical drama, as confirmed by series creator Steven Knight.
In an interview with NME, Knight stated that filming of this much-anticipated one will commence this September and they have “got everything sorted.”
“It’s gonna happen this September,” he told NME. “I’m just doing the final polishes, which will continue up until the day before we start shooting. But we’re there. We’ve got everything sorted, we’ve got all the commitments we need, we are ready to go,” Knight added.
“I think the film is gonna be a step up again, and it’s gonna be great that Peaky fans can meet in one place and watch it. The budget will be bigger, but also because we know we’re ending this chapter, we’re all going to try to do our best. Cillian [Murphy] is really up for it. So I can’t wait for it to start shooting.”
Also, Knight said that Murph is excited to return to the role as well, and every time he got a text from Murphy when the Oscar-winner won an award for his Oppenheimer performance.
“Cillian is really up for it. So I can’t wait for it to start shooting,” he added, “After every award that he won, he would text and say, ‘I really can’t wait to be doing Peaky.’ Confirming that none of this was going to change what we’re going to do next.“
Even Murphy himself has always spoken his mind about joining the movie. “If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it,” Murphy told Rolling Stone U.K. last year.
Other than Murphy, other cast names are not confirmed yet, however, one surprise might appear, i.e. Tom Holland. When Holland once revealed that he was turned down for a role on the show, Knight invited Holland to be part of the Peaky Blinders movie.
Paul Anderson, Sam Claflin, Amber Anderson, Ada Shelby, Stephen Graham, and Tom Hardy are likely to return to their respective roles. Knight earlier confirmed in his interview with Heart Breakfast said that there will also be “some new faces that will hopefully be quite surprising.” (Via Deadline)
What Could be the Plot of Peaky Blinders Movie?
While specifics about the script remain largely unknown, creator Steven Knight revealed to Radio Times last year that the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie will be set against the backdrop of World War II. He suggested that fans should “expect the unexpected.”
The movie will likely follow Tommy Shelby as he navigates a new life away from his past. This dramatic ending sets the stage for a gripping continuation. According to Knight, they have an exciting concept for the film.
In an interview with Esquire, Knight shared his excitement about discovering new talent:
“The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. How the story will unfold, I don’t know. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be. In series six we’re bringing in the new generation, and they are going to be part of what happens in the film. I think it’s finding those actors that you just watch and you think, there you go. There’s the future.“
Knight has previously spoken about his vision for Tommy’s redemption, hinting that the film might continue this arc. Season 6 explored Tommy’s guilt and desire to move away from violence. While these comments weren’t made specifically about the movie, they suggest a potential path for Tommy’s character.
With filming scheduled for September 2024, fans won’t have to wait too long to witness the next chapter in the Peaky Blinders saga. Expect a bigger budget, a wartime setting, and the Shelby family’s signature blend of power, danger, and intrigue.
All six seasons of Peaky Blinders are available on Netflix.
