Will Smith’s return to Hollywood following the controversies sparked after his infamous Oscar slap at Chris Rock has seemingly evaporated. The actor who has been an A-lister for decades, bounced back with his comeback picture Bad Boys: Ride or Die earning $389.6 million with enough positive reviews to certify the movie fresh at Rotten Tomatoes. Smith has several projects on his plate now but his 2007 post-apocalyptic action sci-fi, I Am Legend getting a sequel gained wide attention from fans.
Will Smith’s I Am Legend 2 Is In Works
It has been close to 17 years since the first I Am Legend movie hit the theaters. Based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 post-apocalyptic horror novel of the same name, I Am Legend was a huge hit claiming a staggering $585.4 million at the global box office. Fans have waited far too long for a sequel to the movie and now Warner Brothers has finally ordered the project to move ahead.
I Am Legend 2 is officially at work with Will Smith returning to his role Dr. Robert Neville— a virologist who lost his family and is the sole remaining human inhabitant in New York City researching for a cure for the virus that has infected the world. Michael B. Jordan who has Black Panther and Without Remorse to his credit is joining Smith in I Am Legend 2. Also, according to Deadline, Warner Brothers is eying on Transformers: Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple Jr. to helm the highly anticipated project.
If Caple Jr. agrees to direct the movie it will mark his second collaboration with Jordan as the actor-director duo first worked together in 2018 action sports Creed II. Smith and Jordan will share the screens for the first time as well.
I Am Legend 2 Sparks Major Hype Among Fans
I Am Legend 2 gets a major update at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 with screenwriter and producer of I Am Legend, Akiva Goldsman who has an Oscar to his credit for the 2001 movie A Beautiful Mind, shared there is a lot of space for him to play with, at least for another movie. “The world returns in a way that is kind of spectacular – an exciting playground for all of us – not your father’s I Am Legend,” the screenwriter said at an SDCC event (via Deadline). Also, another report swirling claims that the movie will follow the alternate ending of the first movie. Now, fans of the movie took to X to share their excitement on the project.

So far, Warner Brothers or Goldsman has not announced the other information on the movie including other cast members, and release date. Considering the project is in early development, the movie may hit theaters in the summer of 2027.
