What's Inside?

  • Jamie Dornan cast as the new Aragorn, marking a major shift from Viggo Mortensen’s iconic portrayal.
  • Andy Serkis directs and returns as Gollum, joined by Kate Winslet and returning franchise stars.
  • Warner Bros. expands Middle-earth with more films planned beyond The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Warner Bros. has unveiled the full ensemble for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, answering a long-standing question about Aragorn while expanding Middle-earth with new faces. The announcement confirms a mix of returning icons and fresh casting choices, with the spotlight firmly on the actor stepping into one of the saga’s most revered roles.

The film, directed by Andy Serkis, is set to arrive in cinemas on 17 December 2027. Alongside familiar characters, the project introduces a reimagined Aragorn, signalling a new chapter that connects past legacy with future storytelling in Tolkien’s world.

Returning to Middle-earth are Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. Andy Serkis reprises his performance as Gollum while also directing. The ensemble expands further with Kate Winslet as Marigol, Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Leo Woodall as Halvard. Winslet’s casting brings notable weight to the project.

Production is underway in New Zealand, a location closely tied to the franchise’s visual identity. With a release set for late 2027, the timeline allows for an extensive post-production process, particularly given the reliance on advanced motion capture and visual effects.

What Is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum About?

Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the story follows Aragorn’s mission to track down Gollum before he can reveal critical information to Sauron. The narrative draws from J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices and expands on events only briefly mentioned in earlier films.

The focus on Gollum adds a psychological layer to the story. Peter Jackson explained the character’s lasting appeal: “The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Jackson told Deadline.

“I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”

Serkis also reflected on his return and evolution as a filmmaker: “I was absolutely floored,” Serkis told Deadline.

“They have done this to me before, and this had the same effect as when I got the call telling me I was going to direct second unit on The Hobbit. I was preparing to shoot my first independent film, something with three actors in two locations. And then it was just like, do you want to come direct the second unit on the biggest films in the world? I’m very honored that they’ve asked me to come back. I really am. I love them as filmmakers because they are honest. They always go for the truth.”

Will There Be More Films in The Lord of the Rings Universe?

The studio’s plans extend beyond a single film. Warner Bros. has secured rights to develop multiple projects based on Tolkien’s work, opening the door to a broader slate of Middle-earth stories. Creative leads, including Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, remain closely involved, ensuring continuity with the original trilogy.

Future adaptations may explore lesser-known chapters and characters, with one project reportedly inspired by sections of The Fellowship of the Ring that were not previously adapted. The aim is to deepen the mythology while maintaining the tone that defined the earlier films.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
