Disney has dropped the first trailer for The Lion King prequel that follows the life and evolution of young Mufasa and Scar. Moonlight (Best Picture Oscar winner in 2017) director Barry Jenkins is directing the movie produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pastel Productions.

Mufasa: The Lion King trailer is out. The live-action styled photorealistic animated feature is the prequel to the remake of the 2019 film The Lion King. Barry Jenkins’ helming the project shows promising intent to the successful hit movies previously released from the saga including the 1994 film The Lion King which earned a whopping $986 million worldwide.
The first trailer of the movie revealed that Mufasa: The Lion King will chronicle the story of young Mufasa and Scar with their astonishing adventures in the jungle. The movie is written by Jeff Nathanson who also wrote the 2019 musical adventure with the director Jon Favreau.
Several original cast is returning from the Favreau-directed movie. John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba and Beyoncé as Nala. Joining the old cast, Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter is set to play Kiara, the daughter of King Samba and Queen Nala.
Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Compose The Original Soundtrack Of Mufasa: The Lion King
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the songs for the movie, also produced by himself alongside Mark Mancina. The movie is produced by Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, and executive-produced by Peter Tobyansen.
“Elton John. Tim Rice. Hans Zimmer. Lebo M. Mark Mancina. Beyoncé, Labrinth, Ilya Salmanzadeh. Beau Black, Ford Riley, the incredible music team on ‘The Lion Guard,’ and so many musical contributors over the years. ‘The Lion King’ has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it,” Miranda said in a statement (via Variety).
The composer went on to add, “It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters.”

Barry Jenkins’ new movie at Disney has a roaster of new actors joining the film. Tiffany Boone will play Sarabi alongside, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki; Preston Nyman as Zazu; Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros; Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother, Eshe; Lennie James as Taka’s father, Obasi; Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother, Afia; and Keith David as Mufasa’s father, Masego.

Explaining his take on the movie, Jenkins revealed his emotional attachment to The Lion King saga. “Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” he said in a statement (via Variety). “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true,” he added.
Mufasa: The Lion King certainly has promising aesthetics with the hype of diving into the original story of iconic characters, Mufasa and Scar as the movie is all set to join the legacy of the successful franchise from Disney.
Mufasa: The Lion King will hit the theaters on December 20, 2024.
