Avatar franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular movie series in the history of cinema which has also dominated the box office making James Cameron the second highest-grossing director of all time, just behind Steven Spielberg (per The Numbers). While a few more installments to Avatar were previously announced, Avatar 3 gets the official title, logo, and release date at the D23 Expo.

Just announced at #D23, our title for the next Avatar film:

“You’ll see a lot more pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said of Avatar 3 titled Avatar: Fire and Ash during the presentation of the movie (via Variety). “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love,” he added.

The presentation also unveiled the official fiery logo which looks amazing as hailed by several fans. The concept photos gave a glimpse of the movie as Cameron explained the tonality of the movie, which, according to the director would be very different from the previous two blockbuster installments.

Cameron promised audiences an expanded exploration of Pandora, unlike anything we’ve seen before describing the movie as an “insane adventure” that would be a visual spectacle. Also, the movie will not shy away from the unprecedented emotional depth while pushing the central characters in the upcoming installment into uncharted and challenging territories.

The story of Fire and Ash will pick up right where the actions of the previous film, Avatar: The Way of Water left off, with Jake and Neytiri becoming embroiled in a new Na’vi tribe: named the “Ash People.” Cameron has suggested that the new clan of Na’vi are more violence-prone and powerful than other tribes we’ve seen so far in the world of Pandora.

Cameron also spoke about introducing a compelling new character whom everyone will either love or hate. “There are new characters, one especially I think you’re gonna love, or love to hate,” Cameron said. Oona Chaplin, known for her work in Game of Thrones, assumes the lead role of Varang, a woman leader of the Ash People. Also new in the cast are David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh.

Many familiar faces are returning to Pandora’s landscape, with mainstays from the original— Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao.

Cameron has reportedly shot Fire and Ash back-to-back with Avatar: The Way of Water which was released in 2022 claiming $2.320 billion at the global box office. Cameron’s first Avatar movie which was released in 2009, still holds the No. 1 spot with a $2.923 billion worldwide collection.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled to hit the theaters on December 19, 2025.
