Starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, Denis Villeneuve directed Dune: Part 2 has received praise and tagged as bigger, bolder and better by David Fear from Rolling Stone. The sequel to Villeneuve’s 2021 film has crossed the $500 million mark at the global box office signifying its brilliance in everything. Now as per a report by Variety, the script for Dune 3 is almost finished. Meanwhile, Villeneuve has made a big revelation regarding the third installment.
Denis Villeneuve Will Make Dune 3 Under One One Condition
Both the original Dune movie and the sequel were big box office hits and critically acclaimed. When fans are anticipating a third entry in the Dune franchise, director Denis Villeneuve has given an update on it. He thinks if he has to make the third film, there is one certain condition that has to be met.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Villeneuve addressed the possibilities of Dune: Part Three. He said: “I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me.”
“I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after ‘Part One.’ We were already designing, writing, et cetera. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to step back a little bit. First, make sure that we have a strong screenplay. The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper.”
And when it was the time to speak on Dune: Part 3, the director said:
“If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant. If ever I do ‘Dune Messiah,’ [it’s] because it’s going to be better than ‘Part Two,‘” he added. “Otherwise, I don’t do it.”
After seeing the first two movies, it can be assumed that there is still a lot more to come from the franchise. And. previously Villeneuve also expressed his desire to make it a trilogy. Hopefully, it comes out!
What Can We Expect from a Potential Dune: Part 3?
As of now, there is no official confirmation on Dune: Part 3. But following the success of both movies, there’s high potential for a third part, and Legendary Entertainment, who produced the first two movies will try their best to move forward with it. But what could happen in the third installment when it takes shape?
Villeneuve has always intended Dune to be a trilogy and, likely, he will not explore beyond Paul Atreides’ saga although Frank Herbert created the illustrious world of Dune with a total of six books before his demise in 1986. Back to the third installment of Villeneuve’s epic endeavor, the director would not hesitate to jump right into adapting Herbert’s Dune: Messiah. It would be yet another complex narrative with socio-political conflict with classic character development.
In its essence, the third film of the series will mark the beginning of the unholy war as teased at the end of the second part of the movie. Atreides ascending to become Emperor would have utter consequences as the other noble houses would not acknowledge his rule. As he declared war against the noble houses billions died following the religious cult of the Messiah.
Further, one of the biggest secrets and surprises of the movie, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Paul Atreides’ yet-to-be-born sister, Alia in Dune: Part Two made her brief appearance and it is no secret that she will have a much bigger role in the sequel.
Dune: Part Three is essential for the completion of the trilogy, especially, narrative-wise which would conclude the event of the Atreides saga without making the franchise half-baked. But it seems that Villeneuve will take his time to create the world on his own before unleashing it for the audience to witness another spectacle of the sand on the big screen.
Dune: Part Two is currently showing in cinemas.
