The immense fandom for the Star Wars franchise is loyal to the mythological premise of the franchise but Donald Glover believes that the highly popular franchise is way too serious. All the grave seriousness and grand narrative structures might make fans crave some fun and the actor has a solution to that as well.

While it is subjective to look at Star Wars with the right amount of fun to dilute some of the grave seriousness, Donald Glover thinks that the franchise has been far too serious. During a chat with The Wall Street Journal, the actor revealed that he wants to bring back the fun. “I just want it to be fun,” he recently told the outlet during a video interview. “As a ‘Star Wars’ fan myself, I think it’s important that there needs to be fun being had,” he added.
“It’s very hard to have fun right now. It’s tough because there are very serious things happening and those are the only things that connect us, weirdly. So I get why things are serious, but part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have enjoyment. And I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.”
The 40-year-old star who recently created and led Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is set to appear as Lando Calrissian in a Star Wars movie he has developed with his brother Stephen Glover for Disney and Lucasfilm. Glover initially played Lando Calrissian in Ron Howard-directed 2018 movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. While the movie was not as successful as intended, Glover’s character was a hit among fans.

So far, it is only reported to be in the development process only. In 2023, the actor spoke with GQ magazine as he was eying to return to play the character again. “We’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down,” Glover said at the time teasing the project.
Speaking of the intricate character, Glover continued, “Lando is charm incarnate.” He added, “He’s kind of a maverick, which I don’t think there’s a lot of anymore. It’s hard to be the smooth talker nowadays. Where’s the line? That’s also where the danger is. How close can you get without tripping over it?”
“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic s*it, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”
Later, Variety confirmed that Glover’s Star Wars project would actually be a movie rather than an originally intended show for Disney Plus. But so far, most details are kept under wraps.
