Marvel Studios revealed extensive details of several upcoming projects including The Fantastic Four. While the studio announced the reboot for the third time under a new banner back in 2019, many speculations were swirling among fans. Now, the project is coming to fruition with an ensemble cast. But a creative decision for The Fantastic Four reboot will differentiate the tonality of the movie in a major way when it comes to the theatrical releases from the studio.
The Fantastic Four— SDCC Updates
The Fantastic Four has several new updates coming straight out of Comic-Con International: San Diego, 2024. The movie starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Julia Garner, and Ralph Ineson has a new title, The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Matt Shakman is directing the upcoming movie that will follow the adventure of the titular FF characters. Marvel Studios also showed exclusive footage of the movie for the attendees at SDCC. The short footage opens with a scene where Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, addresses a classroom and asks if they are interested in seeing an explosion.

Later, The Thing played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, appears on the old-school dating show, The Dating Game, but only visible as a silhouette. The footage transitions to show the team in astronaut suits, each labeled with their characters’ last names, as they board a rocket with a retro-futuristic design. As the rocket takes off, the aspect ratio shifts.
Finally, fans were teased a scene with a glimpse of Galactus’ face behind a building, part of his face visible through the structure, which kind of looks faithful to the comics.
Marvel Studios’ Big Creative Decision For The Fantastic Four Movie
Matt Shakman is directing the movie from a screenplay written by Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer, and Eric Pearson. The cinematic creatives of the movie have added a major twist that was revealed at the SDCC event which will seemingly change the narrative tonality of the movie in a contradicting manner from the rest of the Marvel Studios’ theatrical slates.
The footage presented at the event was filmed in a 4:3 aspect ratio which is an indication of the fact that the entire movie will be in the format which will be a first for the studio to make such a big creative step challenging the modern cinema formats. The clip which appears to be identical to playing on a retro television, perfectly fits as the movie is set in the 1960s adhering to its aesthetics with a futuristic version of the period.
Addressing the audience Shakman shared that the cityscape of New York in the movie is “what you’ve seen from the 60’s and something more,” (via Discussing Film).
The title, The Fantastic Four: First Steps also baffled some fans as Marvel Studios puts a lot on their plates for thoughts. Primarily the words, First Step seemingly have more in-depth meaning. The words could mean the first step towards space exploration as the movie itself is set in the era when the seed of the idea of space exploration thrived.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps has added extensive hype again with new details about the movie.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 25, 2025.
