Hugh Jackman is making his return felt in Deadpool & Wolverine as everyone loved him reprising his role along with Ryan Reynolds. But what is Wolverine’s future after Hugh Jackman? Well, in his recent discussion with Discussing Film, Marvel President Kevin Feige has commented if Wolverine would eventually get a new actor.

Hugh Jackman has undeniably become synonymous with the iconic character Wolverine, gracing the silver screen for over two decades in a remarkable ten films. While his portrayal in James Mangold’s Logan was initially intended as a poignant farewell, the allure of the character brought him back for a thrilling cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine.

With Jackman now firmly entrenched in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are eagerly speculating about his future as the clawed mutant. Will he continue to embody the character, or will the mantle be passed to a new actor for the anticipated X-Men reboot?

In an interview with Discussing Film, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ head, discussed Jackman’s future as Wolverine and the possibility of replacing him. Feige responded affirmatively when asked if another actor might portray Wolverine in the MCU, emphasizing Marvel’s long history and future.

“You know, Marvel is celebrating its 85th anniversary later this summer. That’s just the first 85 years, and Disney just celebrated 100 years as well. I think these characters will be around for another 100 years, long after all of us,” he said, adding that Wolverine would eventually be portrayed by another actor in a different style. Feige also warned that attempting to mimic Jackman’s Wolverine would be a “pretty big mistake.“

While Jackman’s tenure as Wolverine is not yet over, it is clear that Marvel Studios has a plan to ensure the next actor in the role is not overly compared to Jackman. Feige’s vision includes a distinct and bold new take on Wolverine, ensuring the character continues to evolve within the MCU.

SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine follow: It appears Jackman will remain as Wolverine for at least one more movie, likely Avengers: Secret Wars. However, when the time comes for him to retire the character, Feige has various options in mind.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, multiple Wolverine variants are encountered, including one played by Henry Cavill, though it is unlikely Cavill will take over the role in the MCU. Another potential successor is X-23, with Dafne Keen reprising her role from Logan and joining her “father” in the film’s final scene.

As Marvel Studios approaches the launch of their X-Men series, it is almost certain that Wolverine, one of the most popular X-Men, will be included in their plans. Feige has already considered how to differentiate the new Wolverine from Jackman’s iconic portrayal. He stated that comic readers are familiar with various versions of these characters over the decades, hinting at the possibility of exploring different interpretations in the future.

Feige noted, “As comic readers know, there have been various and very, very different versions of these characters over the decades,” and expressed interest in exploring different versions someday. Although there are no immediate plans, he believes that in the future, a bold reinterpretation of Wolverine will be necessary because no one will match Hugh Jackman’s portrayal.

Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now.
