After a spectacular bang and nostalgic treat from Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been eagerly waiting for the production update of Spider-Man 4. The Tom Holland-led franchise that has already spawned into three installments with a few appearances of the character in other MCU projects is seemingly in production hell as Marvel President Kevin Feige shared the latest update on the movie that might upset certain fans.
Sorry MCU Fans, Spider-Man 4 Has A Disappointing Update
Like Mahershala Ali’s Blade, an MCU project that has been in developmental hell since the announcement of the reboot, Spider-Man 4 is also taking things slower than before. Of course, Disney is more cautious about Marvel Slates now following the devastating box-office disappointment of Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels but Spider-Man being one the biggest franchises in MCU has surprisingly faced unexpected delays.
Marvel Studios playing it safe as Superhero fatigue has been on the horizon. Fans could not be fooled by any random superhero project thrown at them. Several DC slates have struggled to keep up with fans but James Gunn’s Superman would likely change the scenario. Back to Marvel Studios, the superhero brand kept Deadpool & Wolverine as the only theatrical release for 2024 which reveals that they are pretty serious about the business.
Of course, like Blade, the studios would want to make Spider-Man 4 right, at least going close to the spectacle delivered by the last installment of the movie that saw Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and iconic villains of their Spider-Man universe. A multiversal treat indeed. Now, as we wait for the next installment which was already confirmed by Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal before met with a disappointing update.
Jon Watts who was set to return to his director’s chair for the fourth installment may not be able to continue his streak of directing the franchise. “We love Jon,” Feige told CinemaBlend teasing the inevitable. “Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us. He’s got lots of things going on now. So we’ll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he’s busy,” he added.
Spider-Man 4 was also partly affected by the dual strikes in Hollywood like several other movies and TV shows. However, Marvel is still making more cautious steps as they have been on the hunt for directors for several projects to come in the future.
But Hey, There’s Also A Good News
The delay of Spider-Man 4 is possibly due to the stack of upcoming projects Marvel Studios has on its plates but the Tom Holland movie is too big to discontinue, that’s a relief. Amid the disappointing update of Jon Watts’ potential departure from the project, Feige has a bit of good news for fans to catch their breath after all. Speaking with iO9, the Marvel Boss shared that the project is underway.
“Amy [Pascal] and I are working on it,” Feige said. “We have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon.”
Also, as Feige teased that the MCU’s mutant era is set to begin with Deadpool & Wolverine, the upcoming Marvel projects will have Mutants and Avengers crossovers. “So I think as we always try to do, as we did when we made the arrangement with Sony for Spider-Man, you’ll probably see a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before.”
Marvel’s X-Men ’97 for Disney+ has already teased the core essence of the future of the Mutants in the MCU following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. Now it is possible to have the desired crossovers that will unfold several stories.
