Henry Cavill’s Superman suit in Man of Steel and other DCEU movies is arguably one of the best costumes for the titular superhero— it’s modern and futuristic. Zack Snyder who directed Man of Steel broke his sweat alongside the costume design team to meet his vision as he was telling the origin story of Superman. James Gunn’s version of Superman, however, is in stark contrast to the narrative of Snyder for which he required a new actor to play the role as he, being the co-CEO revamped the DC Universe.
Zack Snyder Finally Shared His Thoughts On David Corenswet’s Superman Suit
Zack Snyder’s DC tenure is seemingly over following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s takeover for a new dawn of the DC Universe after the studio’s constant battle to keep their slates afloat at the box office. Soon after their takeover, Gunn announced his version of Superman movie (previously titled Superman: Legacy) has later starred David Corenswet as Superman.

When Gunn shared the first look at Corenswet’s Superman suit online, there was a huge debate among fans as most have compared it to Henry Cavill’s iconic modern textured and curvy costume. However, it was too early to judge as both the suits worn by the actors carry different meanings based on their contrasting narratives. By the look of it, it is fair to assume that Gunn will not inherently follow the origin story of Superman exclusively focusing on Krypton.
Now, Snyder finally commented on Corenswet’s Superman suit. Speaking with The Hollywood Handle in an interview, the Rebel Moon director it’s too early to judge the costume until it hits the big screen. “I’m gonna say that: let’s see it in the movie. I’m interested to see how it works, you know, as a piece of storytelling. Yeah. But I am excited. I’m excited to see it.”
Indeed, while many deemed Corenswet’s costume as baggy, we should wait for the final rendition of the suit, most of which will be fixed in the post-production. Also, considering the narrative difference, Gunn’s take on the classic inspiration appears to be more fitting than a modern one.
James Gunn’s Version Of David Corenswet’s Superman Costumes Serves The Purpose
There is no doubt that the very first photo of Corenswet’s Superman suit shared by Gunn seemed to be hit and a miss as DC fans expected something to blow their brains away. But all the perspectives changed after Gunn’s production of Superman moved outdoors in Cleveland, Ohio. A series of photos from the set were leaked online revealing not just the potential narrative but the costumes of many characters including Superman.
The leaked photos gave away too much detail but we now have a closer look at the costume of Superman revealing a very contrasting design to Cavill’s Man of Steel costume. To begin with, Corenswet’s Superman suit featured the red trunk— adhering to the classic Superman costume— complemented by a classic yellow belt. The ‘S’ emblem is also different with another one added to his red cape.
Looking at the leaked photos of Superman, it is clear that Gunn’s narrative will break away from Snyder’s vision of the character in DCEU which is fine, perhaps better as fans will have another fresh take on the iconic hero. Also, throwback and classic design are seemingly a good fit as the narrative will be more grounded, at least in the first movie.
Of course, the first photo shared by Gunn was poorly lit for which the huge debate sparked but most of it was clarified following the leaked set photos. The most acute version of it, however, appears in the first trailer of the movie and the ultimate treat will be on the big screen in the summer of 2025.
Superman is slated for July 11, 2025 release.
