As James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, the very scenario was changed to the core. Former Superman star Henry Cavill and Batman actor Ben Affleck left the studio while Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot’s future at DC also seems vague. Gunn as he announced his Superman movie, which will mark the dawn of their new DC Universe, starred David Corenswet with several new actors for different roles which will further extend beyond the movie. But certain characters from previous canon will stay unshaken and they are primarily John Cena as Peacemaker and of course, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

As James Gunn previously commented, the new DC Universe will begin with Creature Commandos and his upcoming ambitious movie Superman. The series will see Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller gathering up the army of creatures as she did in the live-action Suicide Squad movies. Recently, Gunn introduced the presentation of the animated series at the Annecy Animation Festival.

Addressing his absence due to the filming of his Superman movie in Atlanta the director revealed details of Creature Commandos via a video message. “It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’ve been entrusted to carry at DC Studios and plays an integral role in the vision for our future storytelling,” Gunn told the audience at the fest (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“Since taking the reins, our true north has been to bring DC film, TV, animation and gaming into alignment under a single banner and bring a sense of unity and consistency into the DCU as a whole,” The Suicide Squad director continued. “This frees us to create a range of products that are diverse and compelling, and deliver great stand-alone entertainment experiences on every medium, while also being part of a larger story that we’re telling within our unified DCU.”

Gunn went on to add, “What this means in practical terms is that our characters can move in and out of animation or jump into a game or onto the big screen, but they will remain consistent throughout: same character, same history, same actor.”

Gunn’s comments during the introduction of the presentation reveal the new beginning of the DC Universe after the studio’s hard-fought battle at the box office with several recent slates that flopped badly including Blue Bettele and The Flash. The DC boss will be consistent with the characters and the history which is a seemingly good thing considering the establishment of a new version of a cinematic universe.

While addressing Creature Commandos, James Gunn also addressed the fate of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller in DCU. The Oscar-winning star appeared in the Suicide Squad movies and John Cena’s Peacemaker series for Max.

Gunn shared that Creature Commandos will start directly after the finale of Peacemaker season 1. “The new series picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale,” Gunn said in the video presentation. “Which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions,” Gunn shared revealing details of the premise of Creature Commandos. “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

The filmmaker also shared his enthusiasm for the show teasing that the leads “are actual literal monsters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the absolute joys of my life.”

Creature Commandos will kick off the DC Universe’s Chapter 1, Gods and Monsters with a reported seven-episode season 1. The series also features Indira Varma as the voice behind Bride of Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Steve Agee as John Economos, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, and Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot & Weasel.

Also, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is getting a solo series, titled Waller on Max, however, the progress of the show was affected by the historic duel Hollywood strikes. But, Gunn previously shared that “Waller’s still happening & [writers] Jeremy & Christal are hard at work writing great stuff, but the schedule was impacted by the strikes so Waller will come after [Peacemaker Season 2] in the larger order of things.”

Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere in December 2024 on DC’s official streamer Max.
