David Corenswet’s Superman is set to hit the theater next year with an astonishing amount of excitement among DC fans as the movie will open the door to the possibilities of several new DC characters having their reign in the superhero brand. Ahead of the movie’s release, Corensewet appeared on Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast for a chat and shared his journey of bulking up for the Superman role.

“I wasn’t 238 [pounds] when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max. It was so awesome, I wanna go back. I put on like one of those crew neck sweatshirts… Champion. And I put on one of those sweatshirts — like an XL or double XL — and I was like, ‘I fill this out. This is amazing.’ I didn’t fit into any of my pants,” Corenswet said on the podcast.

The Hollywood actor added that he “didn’t feel great” bulking up initially. “That was at the peak of my bulk,” Corenswet continued. “And then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting. I started shooting at about 228, 230…I know I wanted this to be my excuse to see what it felt like to gain essentially as much weight as I could,” he added.

Superman is now in the post-production. The James Gunn-directed movie also stars a roster of talents including Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Terence Rosemore, Wendell Pierce, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Christopher McDonald.

Long before his breakthrough with Superman, Corenswet was insecure about his physique. The actor shared that he did not open up about his skinny physique before referring to it as “string bean.” Corenswet said, “I probably wasn’t terribly like open about it in in like the musical theater, like the musical theater crowd, is not so judgmental about like there’s not a whole lot of like you need to be bigger.”

The actor further shared a story of his high school days, “I think I girl I went to high school with once said not to me but in front of me and was definitely like I heard it was like, ‘look, man, nobody wants to date a string bean I was like I am the string bean.’”

“And it’s not true lots of people love dating string beans but I did, I felt I always felt skinny and I always felt like I couldn’t like fill in a fill out a T-shirt and I couldn’t like I always felt like I was like I didn’t quite have the physical presence that I wanted to have okay um so I was always trying and I was 6’4 a lot sooner than I was 200 lb I was like 64 and probably 165 at some point yeah that’s skinny and then every like I don’t know every few years I would manage to.”

The actor further revealed that he “never weight lifted seriously.” However, he always hits the gym, “I was just never doing I was never like keeping track doing progressive overload and I wasn’t consistent about it yeah um and so every like I don’t know two-three years I would jump up five pounds and like you know then I was like oh it’s easy to be 170 and like oh now I can be 175 and then I plateaued around 190 and I thought I I was like I thought I’d be happy at 190 and I wasn’t.”

Finally, he got an excuse to bulk up when he secured the Superman role.

Superman is scheduled to hit the theaters on 11 July 2025.
