Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster Barbie has broken all the barriers rising above the criticism and speculations as it has become the highest-grossing movie of the year standing at a whopping $1.3 billion globally in ticket sales. Colombian singer and songwriter, Shakira who is widely recognized as the Queen of Latin Music has recently commented on the Margot Robbie-starrer movie.

Shakira’s Sons Hated Greta Gerwig’s Barbie

“I watched [Barbie] it, yeah,” Shakira said before diving more into Barbie’s world. If you were upset with Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Oscar snub for Barbie, iconic singer Shakira has some bad news for you.

Shakira revealed that her sons hated Barbie. “My sons absolutely hated it,” the ever-elegant singer told Allure without hiding any part of it. “They felt that it was emasculating,” she added recalling the reactions from her sons— Milan and Sasha. But What about Shakira’s reaction? In a kind of review of the film, of course, after watching the 2023 blockbuster, she did not hesitate to reveal, “And I agree,” she said but “to a certain extent.”

Adding further, Shakira reflected on her sons she shares with her ex and a former professional soccer player, Piqué, “I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.”

Shakira happens to be a vocal feminist, and would not force the perspective of her boys to be altered as she sees the socio-political essence of the movement.

Again, in the ‘kind of and sort of’ review of Barbie by Shakira mostly relates the essence of the film to femininity. Of course, the aura of the pink movie essentially reflected the urge to deliver a feminine message, and it worked. Shakira’s stance, however, as being a long-time advocate of feminism in pop culture, is neutral.

“I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

Fair enough as Allure perfectly puts it about the singer dwelling on the “Shakira Paradox” as she dissolves her feministic ideals into her own brand of feminism. It’s okay to expect men to man up was the reflection of her brand of the ideal. Shakira’s worldview allows equality and progression of the sociocultural landscape walking the same line.

So, did Shakira like Barbie? The 47-year-old beauty icon refrained from exclusively commenting on her liking of the film but analyzing her comment on the sociocultural dynamism reflected in the film through the point of view of a Mattel doll coming to life exploring the world does show the gist of it.

Barbie is currently streaming on Max.
