After the huge success with Barbie, Margot Robbie, the Oscar-nominated star is now set to produce Monopoly, a film based on the classic board game. On Wednesday, it was announced at CinemaCon that Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara are producing the live-action feature film.
Margot Robbie’s Production Company Is Developing a Monopoly Movie
A Monopoly movie development-related news has been running in Hollywood for more than a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But even after some big names came to produce it, that did not become a reality.
But, finally, it’s working. Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap will produce it along with Hasbro Entertainment, part of the American toy company.
This was announced on Wednesday (10 April) at CinemaCon in Las Vegas by Lionsgate and toy company Hasbro.
“Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended,” said LuckyChap. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.” (Via Variety)
Hasbro Entertainment’s head of film Zev Foreman said, “As one of the most iconic games in the world, Monopoly provides an incredible platform for storytelling opportunities. We are thrilled to have the unique vision of LuckyChap and Lionsgate alongside us to bring this historic piece of popular culture to the big screen.”
LuckyChap was formed in 2014 and they have as of now made films such as I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman, and Saltburn as well as TV shows such as Maid and Dollface. Earlier in an interview with THR, Margot Robbie said that they aim to “expand what female stories and female storytellers could do in this industry,” and she does not need to be onscreen for that to happen.
Apart from that, Robbie and LuckyChap are also working on a film about the popular video game franchise The Sims.
What to Know About Monopoly?
Monopoly, the classic board game has been a bestselling one and it taught generations to buy up property, stacking them with houses and hotels, and then leaving their opponents scrambling to pay sky-high rent for the misfortune of landing on their turf.
The brainchild of a left-wing American woman named Lizzy Magie back in 1904, the game was initially called The Landlord’s Game. (per BBC) It was designed to be an educational tool, highlighting the societal issues caused by concentrated wealth and land ownership. The ultimate goal in the game is to be the last standing player with money.
It wasn’t until the Great Depression struck in the 1930s that Monopoly truly emerged. Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game with 99 percent global awareness, according to Lionsgate. Today it is estimated that Monopoly is played by more than one billion people,
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson is hopeful and regarding the story of the live-action film and the director, he said that they have a “clear point of view.”
Meanwhile, Margot Robbie will be seen next along with Colin Farrell in a movie called A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, per a Variety report.
