Did you know Emma Stone is not the real name of the two-time Oscar winner? She has achieved almost everything as Emma Stone, but this is not her real name and she would prefer to be called by her real name. And, to her comment, her Poor Things co-star reacts in his own way.

Emma Stone, who has won two Academy Awards in the Best Actress category for her role in the romantic musical La La Land (2016) and comedy fantasy film Poor Things (2023) would love to be called by her real name, Emily.

During a joint interview for The Hollywood Reporter with her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder, the Amazing Spider-Man actress said that her close friends and co-stars do not call her by her stage name. They typically refer to her by a different name.

Earlier in the chat, Fielder told THR that he planned to call Stone her actual name, which is Emily, during the chat.

Fielder said: “Before we continue, I’d like to say something. Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”

To which, Stone responded: “You can say Emma. You can say anything.” On being asked whether she would not correct a fan if someone call her Emily, she said: “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.

Stone explained that she gets “people that I work with” to call her Emily “when I get to know them”.

She added that The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder “calls me Em, which is easier”.

Why Did Emma Stone Do Not Go By Her Real Name?

William Shakespeare in his famous play Romeo and Juliet said, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” It aligns with Emma Stone. Whatever name she picks, her stellar performance will speak louder.

However, in the same interview, she explained what made her change her name to Emma from Emily. She said that her given name “Emily” was already taken by someone else and according to SAG (Screen Actors Guild), no member can have the same name as each other.

So she opted for Emma, one of her idols. She has previously mentioned in an interview with TIME that she had an obsession with Baby Spice from the Spice Girls, Emma Bunton. Thus it stems from that.

Then I freaked out a couple of years ago,” she told reporters.

For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’”

Post her urge to fans to call her by her given name, her Poor Things co-star Mark Ruffalo reacted by saying “Okay. We love you, Emily.”

In Poor Things, Mark Ruffalo played the role of Duncan Wedderburn, a character described in the movie as a cad and a rake for which he also earned an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Poor Things is available to buy or rent on Apple TV.
