Coralie Fargeat directed the latest body horror starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid in prominent roles certified fresh at Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% score from 18 reviews from critics. The review of the movie came after the pic’s recent premiere at Cannes. Here are some of the top reviews from critics—

“Director Coralie Fargeat follows up her gory 2017 rape-reprisal thriller, Revenge, with this outrageous comic body-horror, pitched somewhere between Sunset Boulevard and Brian Yuzna’s cult classic, Society.” — Tara Brady, Irish Times.

“The Substance comes to feel like a slow and superficial waste of an intriguing premise. But the delirious last half-hour makes it all worthwhile.” — Nicholas Barber, BBC.com.

“It’s a thrill to watch an actor [like Demi Moore] go for broke like this, seemingly so devoted to the cause of their film. Fargeat, for the most part, does not fail that determination.” — Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair.

“This is a cheerfully silly and outrageously indulgent piece of gonzo body-horror comedy, lacking in subtlety, body-positivity or positivity of any sort. Roger Corman would have loved it.” — Peter Bradshaw, Guardian.

“Fargaet’s movie escalates with the kind of ultra-confident audacity that leaves you laughing out loud at sights that would otherwise make you shriek instead.” — David Ehrlich, indieWire.

“It’s a classic “be careful what you wish for” film. You may find stardom, but nothing lasts forever.” — Chase Hutchinson, TheWrap.

Decent horror movies, especially body horror have been a rare treat these days but The Substance came up with the promise to deliver a stunning visual treat for fans with a thrilling narrative.

Demi Moore Got A Brilliant Script

Moore got a brilliant script that was hard to refuse. Written, directed, and produced by Coralie Fargeat under the banner of Working Title Films; A Good Story, the movie captured the essence of the genre. The Ghost actor revealed her insistence on getting out of her comfort zone by jumping into the skin of Elisabeth Sparkle in the movie. “I look for things that push me out of my comfort zone,” Moore said of selecting the script (via Deadline).

“The opportunity to make a better person and actor. This touched on so many themes that we all face, we seek validation and belonging. By doing (the movie) it takes us to extremes and allows us to step into it in a unique way.”

Also, the movie has given the very insight into her own life, the actor said, “Through the process of the film, I think I came out with greater acceptance of myself than I am.”

The Substance also stars Hugo Diego Garcia, Phillip Schurer, and Joseph Balderrama.
