Oscars 2024 recognized some great movies where the trio of Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr bagged their first ever Academy Award. It was a night where we have seen moments like John Cena’s almost n-ked appearance, Emma Stone’s surprising reaction to winning Best Actress Award. And, it all added to Oscars 2024 gaining the highest viewership in the last four years.
Oscars 2024 Sees a Record Viewership in Four Years, Yet Very Low Compared to 2014
The Oscars 2024 kicked off with host Jimmy Kimmel’s flat and somewhat unfunny jokes at several celebrities. From poking fun at Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web’s box office failures to making a joke on Robert Downey Jr’s past, many viewers found it cringe.
Despite that, Oscars 2024 managed to go past last year’s viewership by quite a margin. This year, the ceremony attracted 19.8 million viewers, which was 18.8 million last year. However, the ceremony scored low in rating in the 18-49 demographic, a key one for advertisers, While last year it was 4.0, this year the rating was 3.81.
The 2023 broadcast drew 18.8 million viewers. The pandemic-affected year 2021 saw the lowest in these four years with just 10.4 million viewers. It saw quite a jump in the next year with 16.6 million. (Data via Deadline)
The Award ceremony in 2020 that took place just before the lock down was quite high with 23.6 million viewers.
In 2021, when the world was affected by the COVID-19, as expectedly the number in viewership dropped to 10.4 million. But it jumped to 16.6 million next year. The ceremony in 2020 that happened prior to worldwide lock down, was quite high with 23.6 million.
Meanwhile, when we are getting the sense that the credibility of Oscars are coming back, it is actually not. A decade ago in 2014, when we saw 12 Years a Slave winning the Best Picture Award along with Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett winning the Best Actor and Best Actress award for their roles in Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Jasmine respectively, the viewership was staggering high. That year, it rose to 43 million.
Fans Cite Reasons For This Surge in Viewership
Though there are not so specific reasons as to why this year it almost saw 20 million viewers, some fans think Messi, the dog from Anatomy of a Fall is the reason they have watched the ceremony. While others consider the presence of some really good movies being nominated was the reason.Everyone watched for Barbie & it got snubbed hard

Oppenheimer stole the show night with seven Oscars, followed by Poor Things with four. However, even after that, Oppenheimer could not go beyond what Ben-Hur (1959) Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) did. These are the three films with the highest win by a single movie with 11 Academy Awards.
