In the ever-evolving universe of Zack Snyder’s cinematic vision, a third Rebel Moon film isn’t entirely off the table. However, not on the immediate slate. The filmmaker recently revealed he’s shifting gears from intergalactic battles to the gritty streets of Los Angeles for his next Netflix project. While fans continue to explore the franchise through new mediums like gaming, Snyder’s current creative energy is being channeled into a high-stakes LAPD SWAT film, temporarily putting Rebel Moon on pause.
Zack Snyder Says Rebel Moon 3 Is Still On The Card

After back-to-back releases of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire in December 2023 and Part Two: The Scargiver in April 2024, the fate of a third installment remained uncertain, well, until now. Zack Snyder, who envisioned the saga as a darker, more mature take on Star Wars, has yet to confirm a follow-up film, but he hasn’t ruled it out either. Speaking to Variety, he explained the status of the third installment of his ambitious project.
“I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie. So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moon world boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this.”
Snyder admits the production of the two Rebel Moon films was creatively draining, so taking a breather was both necessary and welcome.
“Frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.”
Though the films were met with lukewarm critical reception, they performed well enough to top Netflix’s viewership charts upon release. As the franchise expands into new areas like gaming — including Netflix’s recently released co-op title Blood Line — Snyder maintains there’s more to explore in the Rebel Moon universe. “There’s tons of stories. So, I mean, I think it’s literally, it’s endless. But, again, like I say, I’m waiting to see how we want to and in what way we would move forward, if at all,” he added.
Zack Snyder Gives An Update On His LAPD SWAT Movie For Netflix

Snyder’s immediate focus is now on a very different kind of battleground. Per Deadline, he is developing a gritty, action-heavy LAPD SWAT movie for Netflix, co-written with longtime collaborator Kurt Johnstad. The film is set in a morally complex world, where an elite SWAT unit grapples with the harsh collision of law and ethics. “For Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie,” Snyder confirmed. “So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.”
The yet-to-be-titled project marks the latest entry in Snyder’s ongoing partnership with Netflix through his production banner, Stone Quarry. Alongside producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder, and collaborator Wesley Coller.
Blood Line Game Extends Rebel Moon’s Mythology

While Snyder’s lens shifts to real-world action, the Rebel Moon saga continues to live on, now in the form of Blood Line— a Netflix-exclusive video game developed by Super Evil Megacorp. Launched in July, the online co-op game gives fans a new way to immerse themselves in the franchise by battling the tyrannical Motherworld through customizable rebel characters.
Snyder, who describes himself as a “giant Fortnite fan,” praised the game’s narrative intricacy.
“That’s cool and it’s not really my gaming experience, so it’s fun to kind of get in that head space. And they really, honestly, they’re just super smart about that stuff. And I was really amazed at the level of detail. And when I say the level of detail, of course, everything is detailed — but the sort of narrative detail, where they really kind of giving you these exciting boss fights that make you better, because they kind of teach you how to play.”
As Rebel Moon continues to find life through fresh formats and fans hold out hope for a third film, Snyder’s hope for the third installment remains alive.
