Azazel Jacobs wrote the script of His Three Daughters keeping Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Carrie Coon in his mind to lead the project. “I joined the cast of His Three Daughters because I’ve been good friends with Azazel for five years,” Olsen told Harper Bazar in her recent chat with the outlet for the promotional tour of the movie.

Sharing the backstory of her friendship with the director, Olsen said, “In 2018, I did a TV show for Facebook called Sorry For Your Loss alongside him and we became fast friends.” Later, “He showed me the script and said he’d written it with me, Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne in mind.”

“It was a different experience to how I most often read scripts, which is going through a pile of PDFs. The project had a life beyond the words on a page. I wanted to be there for him. I wanted to work with Natasha, I wanted to work with Carrie, and then we got to build this miniature world together.”

As for working with her co-stars, the Marvel star shared that it was “an intense experience.” They first met when they had “a few days of rehearsal that we built into the schedule, and it was really about us.” She added, “Not all actors show up to work in a state of openness and vulnerability, because it’s a lot to ask of someone to very quickly meet someone and say, ‘This is who I am.’ But we all did that. We all showed up knowing that time was limited and that we didn’t have much time to lose.”

Olsen’s decision to join the film has proved to be right as the movie claimed a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes score from 48 critics.

His Three Daughters follows three distant sisters who reunite in New York City to care for their sick father. However, the tension in the R-rated comedy drama escalated as they confronted past issues while aiming to heal family bonds amid laughter and tears.

Olsen further shared that the family dynamics in the film are quite relatable for everyone, “I think is very relatable for anyone with siblings,” the actor told Bazar. “There are these roles that, as we become adults, are assumed of us within our families. We are assumed to play a character that makes everything easier, and if we change those dynamics, that disrupts the order,” she added.

In this film, the 35-year-old said that three sisters met “from this place of performing what they’re supposed to be to one another, because that’s just what they’ve become used to, and then we watch it become more complicated as the story unravels.” she further teased that the audience’s opinions of “these women” also start to “change as the story shows itself.”

“So I think it’s relatable to anyone in any family dynamic; you play a certain role to your parents and your parents play a certain role to you. It’s about our perspectives of the people that we share a family with.”

His Three Daughters premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year on Sept. 9, it was released in the UK cinemas on Sept 6 this year with Netflix’s global release scheduled for Sept 20, 2024 release.
