“I think there was this weird rumor on the internet saying that I did it to take back my identity, which is something I’ve never said in my entire life,” Pugh told Vanity Fair. “I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, ‘John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done’ and if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this,” she added.

Pugh’s dedication to the role is certainly commendable. The actor has been one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood with her charisma and prowess in almost every performance she delivered.

There have been several roles on her plate due to her rising fame as an actor. She has several incredible roles to her credit including her appearances in Midsommar, Little Women, Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, and of course, Marvel Studios’ Black Widow. While casting for We Live in Time, Crowley thought of Pugh opposite Garfield.

“I never met her, but I’ve been a huge fan of her work, and very struck by her ability to portray a degree of strength and robustness,” the director told Vanity Fair. “I thought if she could take that and get towards the vulnerability that’s needed towards the end of the story, that could be really rich and interesting,” he added.

But getting her onboard was a set of challenges that almost destroyed Crowley’s hope as the actor was busy filming Marvel’s highly anticipated Thunderbolts* at the time. But the luck has changed, the director finally got the nod from the actor after a change in schedule for Thunderbolts* which created enough space for her to film the movie.

“I think for a long time, I’ve wanted to find something that is not necessarily as hardened or as powerful as my other characters. I think this came at the right time in my life. I got to play a very, very normal woman who is talented in her own ways. The story is about the powerful love, and the powerful connection, between two people,” Pugh said.

The unconventional love story of We Live In Time will hit the theaters on October 11, 2024.
