However, following the event Cameron spoke with Rotten Tomatoes sharing the meaning behind the title.

The director then decoded the essence of Ash in the film. “What does ash represent? In my mind, in this film, it represents the aftermath of all of that energy which is grief,” he said adding, “Having to live with what you’ve done.”

“As I told, you know, the audience today, 14,000 of my closest friends, this film goes much deeper on our characters and deep emotional consequences for them that threatens their relationships with each other, test their bonds and that’s why I say I think the movie is simultaneously unexpected based on what you think you’ve seen six hours into the Avatar saga so far between the first film and the second film.”

Cameron further teased that the movie will “also be what you crave.” As an audience, fans will crave, as per the director, “is not just the beautiful imagery, we have that, we have an amazing, detailed rich world and imagination of a lot of great artists that go into it.

By this point, the director cares about the “journey of these people” and the stunning adventures.

Cameron also revealed that the upcoming grand preparation will explore two new cultures. “You could explore Pandora for the rest of your life and see all these different amazing places and the way that nature adapts in a way that these humanlike intelligent beings adapt to these different biomes,” Cameron told Rotten Tomatoes TV.

The director made it clear that the essence of their relationship with nature will be a “continuing thing” even if they decide to go beyond movies four and five in the franchise as he teased that they are all already written. “They are all written. They’re written like a series of novels, they are just kind of kept in a vault right now.”

“But we know where we are going with this. We’ll meet two new cultures in this film. We met one new culture in the last film. We meet two new cultures. The reef people in the last film, they took us into their world and you’ll meet two new ones and you’re going to their world.”

Cameron further revealed that they have been adding new details and complexities to these characters but “stay at the core of this relationship between Jake and Neytiri and their children.” The children are also “quite central” to the narrative as teased by the director.

Avatar: Fire and Ash originally staled for a December 9, 2025 release.
