Netflix’s one of the most ambitious shows, 3 Body Problem season 1 run was quite successful with all the intense drama and astonishing sci-fi experience. The end of the first season has definitely teased at least another season run ending the show with a cliffhanger. Now, fans are expecting the renewal of the hit sci-fi show.
3 Body Problem stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce. Here’s what we know about the potential second season of the series.
Promising Update From 3 Body Problem Creators
Created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem recently got a positive update on the show’s potential second season. Originally, the show was imagined as a four-season series, and in a chat with Vulture, Woo gave an insight extending his previous comment. “We’ve done a good amount of work on the second season,” Woo said.
“At this point, the shape of it is pretty detailed in terms of character journeys and who lives, who dies, who goes where, how things function. The rest of it … there are three books, so that seems to suggest three seasons. The third book is very long, which might suggest more than three seasons, but we’ve already used a fair amount of the third book. It’s hard to know until you get there.”
Although there is no official confirmation from Netflix about the renewal of the show, it seems almost inevitable for obvious reasons. Per Deadline, the show claimed over 18 million views in its first two weeks on Netflix, if that is not the best reason, what is?
Meeting The End Of The Trilogy
Based on the novel series of three books by Liu Cixin, the show also needs to meet the end and the first season was far from it, in fact, it was the beginning of it. “Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy,” Woo told GamesRader.
“The novels get longer and longer so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three. We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four, you know, or some other number.”
Woo went on to add, “The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons but beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly.”
D. B. Weiss, co-creator of the sci-fi show, revealed that they are already mapping more seasons despite Netflix greenlighting the extension. “We don’t have a second season, but we need to keep pushing forward full steam ahead as if we did,” Weiss said.
“Because if we do get a second season, we’ll need to hit the ground running in terms of pre-production and production to get it out to people in some kind of reasonable time. A show like this takes a long time to make and you can’t wait to get started thinking about it until somebody gives you the green light.”
Of course, the showrunners are hopeful for the extension of the show, and now all eyes are on Netflix’s official confirmation.
Second Season Is On The Deck Of The Creators
The creators have a sense of where the second and third seasons are heading. “I think we have a pretty evolved sense of where it’s going,” Weiss said.
“We’ve been doing some work on that front and the subsequent seasons after that are a lot hazier because once you really get into the weeds on a season of television it really takes all of your waking hours, and there’s not much time left to be simultaneously plotting a third or a fourth season. So the short answer is yes, we’ve got a second season that is being formulated and kept on deck in the event that we get to go ahead.”
Of course, 3 Body Problem will not happen just in a day. It seems that Netflix is being cautious with every aspect of the potential forthcoming seasons.
In a chat with Deadline, Weiss further revealed that the second season really gets wild. “This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem remained one of the most expensive shows of recent times with a massive budget of $160 million which equates to $20 million per episode.
When Could 3 Body Problem Season 2 Release?
The season 2 of 3 Body Problem is almost certain but as of writing this piece, we have no official confirmation. Still, considering all the good reasons and astonishing viewership, the renewal is quite plausible.
But it is hard to predict the release date as of yet. Still, if Netflix greenlighted the project this month or the next, the production could start by the end of the year. Post-production of the project would also consume quite a while and calculating all the aspects, it is fair to presume that 3 Body Problem season 2 might hit the streamer in 2026.
The first season of 3 Body Problem is now streaming on Netflix.
