Zoe Saldaña, known for her role as Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek franchise once had zero idea about the Star Trek franchise and then in 2004 she did a film with Steven Spielberg that only introduced her to the franchise. Recently, she is sharing her thoughts on returning back to a possible fourth film of the Kelvin Timeline.
Zoe Saldaña Is Hopeful to Do One More Star Trek Movie
Producer J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures have been trying to get a fourth Star Trek film for years, but for various reasons this is not happening. Star Trek Beyond was the last Star Trek movie, that too eight years ago. And it’s been discussed that Paramount wants to bring back the whole cast from the original 2009 Star Trek reboot.
The original 2009 cast includes Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zoe Saldaña as Lt. Nyota Uhura, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy, John Cho as Lt. Hikaru Sulu as well as Simon Pegg as the chief engineer Montgomery Scott.
Now, Zoe Saldaña is expressing her desire to reprise her role of Nyota for one last time. Addressing her wish in an interview for The Playlist’s podcast, The Discourse, the actress said;
“I still have hope. I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team,” she said.
“I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on Star Trek, which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”
It is not the first time that she spoke her mind. Even previously, in an interview with ComicBook.com she said that she will be hoping for a nod from Paramount for a fourth movie.
“I mean, I heard what you heard in the trades. I just heard they’re gearing up to do a new one with a younger, sort of, take on it… I don’t know if it’s from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round. Listen, I know it’s a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules. But working with J.J. Abrams, and for J.J. Abrams at Bad Robot, was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So, if I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful.“
Okay, that’s understandable. But while all these rumors are going on, Star Trek: Section 31, starring Michelle Yeoh is the only Star Trek movie which is currently in production.
Zoe Saldaña Had No Idea about Star Trek Franchise
Zoe Saldaña earned her fame with her breakthrough role as Nyota, but it was not a familiar franchise for the Avatar actress. Steven Spielberg, who cast her for his 2004 film The Terminal as Dolores, introduced her to the sci-fi franchise.
Saldaña recalled this in an interview with TrekMovie:
“I didn’t even know what the word ‘Trekkie’ meant. So, I didn’t know what conventions were. I knew of Star Trek, but not extensively. So part of doing my research to have the feel to be a Trekkie and to go to these conventions.”
She had to watch some previous movies from the franchise to study her role in Spielberg’s movie.
“I saw a couple of the episodes, and I saw Trekkies 1 and 2, and I remember watching it, and the people around me were sort of laughing at everything, and I felt so overwhelmed, and I felt so happy that I remember thinking, ‘I want to be like that, I want to be so passionate about something that I incorporate it in my everyday life and it is the reason I wake up and it fulfills me.’ ”
Few days back, Variety reported that Steve Yockey, the writer/creator behind The Flight Attendant, was brought in to write the script for the final movie. Fans can anticipate it, with a hope to have the official confirmation.
