The Ex Machina and Annihilation director Alex Garlands has again confirmed his comment from 2022 about filmmaking. In a recent interview, Garlands said that he is quitting directing after his upcoming film Civil War starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Cailee Spaeny.
Alex Garland Confirms His Retirement from Directing
After stating that he would be retiring from directing after Civil War, in an interview with the New York Times in 2022, now Alex Garland reiterates his decision to step back from directing.
While speaking with The Guardian recently, the filmmaker has said that he is not in mood to do another one after Civil War.
“Nothing’s changed. I’m in a very similar state. I’m not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future.”
“I do actually love film, but filmmaking doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It exists in a life and also in a broader context.”
He cited that this is not related to money or funding.
“The pressure doesn’t come from the money. It comes from the fact that you’re asking people to trust something that, on the face of it, doesn’t look very trustworthy,” Garland said.
Instead of directing, he will shift his focus to screenwriting. Civil War is scheduled for April 12 release.
This Is Not The First Time Alex Garland Discussed His Departure from Directing
Seems like, Garland has made up his mind to say goodbye to filmmaking as he mentioned two years back in an interview with The New York Times.
That time, he said that he doesn’t “particularly enjoy” directing and that he has to “force” himself to do it.
“I’m tired of feeling like a fraud,” the filmmaker added.
The filmmaker addressed that he has got so many different factors to feel like a fraud.
“But I have been thinking that after the film I’m directing at the moment, I should stop and go back to just writing. That might be part of the reversing away from the world — it’s time to get away from it, I think. I’m not temperamentally suited to being a film director.It would be more honest, probably, to say I don’t particularly enjoy it. It’s something I have to force myself to do.”
The English novelist, screenwriter, and director became known for his novel The Beach. He then received applause for writing the Danny Boyle films 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2011) and Dredd (2012).
