What's Inside?
- Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames in Netflix’s seven-episode adaptation of 'East of Eden.'
- Zoe Kazan’s series shifts focus toward Cathy, offering a darker take on Steinbeck’s classic story.
- The limited series premieres on Netflix in fall 2026 with an ensemble cast including Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist.
Netflix is preparing to bring one of literature’s most celebrated family dramas back to the screen with East of Eden, a seven-episode limited series led by Florence Pugh. Adapted from John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, the series places a sharper focus on Cathy Ames, a morally complex figure whose choices shape generations of the Trask family. The project has already generated major awards buzz long before its premiere, largely because of its ambitious scale and the calibre of talent involved behind the camera.
The series also carries a personal connection for writer and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the iconic 1955 adaptation that turned James Dean into a Hollywood legend. This new version takes a different route. Instead of centring on Cal Trask, the story shifts its emotional weight toward Cathy Ames, played by Pugh, giving the classic novel a darker and more intimate perspective.
What Is Florence Pugh’s ‘East of Eden’ About?

The upcoming drama traces the rise and collapse of the Trask family across several decades, beginning around the American Civil War and continuing through World War I. At the centre stands Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), a woman haunted by fear, survival instincts, and emotional destruction. The teaser released by Netflix hints at the series’ unsettling tone, with Pugh’s Cathy reflecting on wanting to disappear from a world she believes is “so full of evil.”
Rather than presenting a straightforward period drama, the adaptation explores generational trauma, morality, and the emotional consequences of personal decisions. The story also examines the changing social landscape of America during a turbulent era. Alongside the Trasks, the narrative introduces figures such as Samuel Hamilton and Lee, characters who help shape the emotional and philosophical core of the series.
Zoe Kazan has described the novel as deeply personal and emotionally overwhelming, saying its themes have stayed with her since adolescence. That emotional attachment appears central to the adaptation’s creative direction.
‘East of Eden’ Cast And Crew

The cast combines established award winners with rising young performers. Alongside Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, the series stars Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask. Joseph Zada plays Cal Trask, while Joe Anders appears as Aron Trask.
The supporting cast includes Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Tracy Letts, and Hoon Lee.
Behind the scenes, Zoe Kazan serves as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart. Garth Davis directed the first four episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre handled the final three. Production took place across multiple locations in New Zealand.
What Did Florence Pugh Say About ‘East of Eden’?

Speaking during Netflix’s upfront presentation, Pugh explained why Cathy became the emotional centre of the adaptation.
“Cathy is our engine in this version of the story,” she said.
“The series is about how the choices we make reverberate across time. This timeless story gets into the guts of what it means to be alive.”
Zoe Kazan also praised the experience of adapting the novel, saying, “Working on this has been the greatest joy, and I am thrilled by the cast and crew we have assembled.”
When Is East Of Eden Releasing?
Netflix has confirmed that all seven episodes of East of Eden will premiere in fall 2026. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
The timing could place the series firmly in the 2027 awards conversation, especially with Pugh already viewed as a potential Emmy contender for her performance as Cathy Ames.
